I love living in the middle of nowhere but it has its price. We don't have cable or DSL (we're lucky when we have ~electricity~) so satellite is our only broadband option.

The satellite modem failed 2 weeks ago. Now, I can't "calibrate" the replacement because the signal is too low. Apparently it's string enough to support a regular stream of error laden (& recovered) transmissions but not for "calibrating".

The problem is two tall trees that have bent enough to block access to good old "SATMAX-5", they tell me. I haven't determined if we own the trees or not. Either way, the solution is obvious.

Meanwhile, I'm using my Blackberry as a wireless modem.

Never had these problems in the old days.

Got a good, sharp axe inna barn, certes!!!

...an' by th' time those trees are missed you shoulda had a winter's worth of firewood for NEXT season cut up.

"I like mine with lettuce an' tomato..."

If you're using a blackberry can't you get a wireless through Verizon or someone?

I had a similar problem at our new hangar. No internet, no phone. I was going to go with satellite but settled on wireless so I could carry it with me in the airplane. I signed up with Millenicom (reselling Verizon). The total bandwidth for a month is capped at 5gb but the service has been surprisingly solid everywhere I've tried it.

Watch for Clearwire to provide WiMax soon.... the 5Gig limit is kida default "industry standard" just now, too.

We're on the verge of a 3G~4G shift. Providers and th' FCC are hashin' out some changes and "rules" for allocation of resources.

...keep buyin' them iPhones, kids... :madder:

"Heinz 57 an' french fried potato..."

So I guess living in Billings MT isn't that bad after all.

Millenicom subscribers were getting unlimited through the verizon network - using the same network and hardware as verizon customers! Er, until about May I think, then they capped it :frown:

I'm wearing down my phone battery for THIS??? I spill my technical guts all over and you assault me with THAT?

In the memorable words of an early James Bond (Dr. No movie) female villain - "You Rats!"

(Actually, when reception is good the phone performance isn't bad. I'm usually dealing with "one bar", though. I'm using an AT&T "tethering" feature that works ok for one computer but we have several networked for the business and there's no hope there.)

There it goes again! The melody! The lyrics! I need to go buy some cheese. You rats.

We're here for ya, John!

"Not too particular, not too precise..."

Oh! And one should NEVER need to break chunks of water outta th' way just to have the opportunity of catchin' a FISH!! It just ain't RIGHT. :smirk:
