Leaking shock

This may apply to all shocks.

I have a leaking shock on my TD. I took it off the car, topped it off with new fluid and all was perfect. I did not reinstall because I was doing other work but now it sits on my bench in a puddle of fluid.

Question is can they be "re-built" by the enthusiast with your average tool box tools or is there something special you need to have therby having to send them out?
If DIY, are their re-build kits available?

Can the same questions or problems apply to Midget & B shocks.

Only thing I know that is available for them is the valve....there's even a warninig in the manuals not to try & rebuild them....

Fudge! I guess I have to take them to Apple Hydraulics which is local to me. Has anybody used them?

EVERYBODY uses Apple! Do them in pairs, at a minimum.

Have you used them recently and are they costly? What about a warranty on longevity?

Not in a few years...costly? yep, but then, how many shocks last 30 years?

You guys always get me with that 30 year thingy and you are 100% correct. When you think about it that way, it's cheap.

Well, in your case: 50+ years!

Judging by the crud built up on & around the shock, she's been leaking for some time. Let's see 50 years from now I'lll be 90 and this probably will be grandkids problem. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Not me. All my shocks come from Worldwide. They are rebuilt to include a double lip seal, which prevents leaks and wear. They also come with a LIFETIME GUARANTEE against leaks. I've never had to use this warranty.

Their pricing is also fair and they will send you the shocks before you send your old ones, or if you prefer they will rebuild yours.

Just by comparing info from site to site, I like waht you sent Steve. I emailed both and will wait for their response. The Lifetime Guarantee is also a good selling point.

I'm with Steve, send them to Worldwide Auto Parts of Madison https://www.nosimport.com/ I have sent the shock from both our MGB and TD to them and have been completely satisfied witht the results (I did a repair on the front shocks of the TD myself many years ago wit only so - so results after many hours of very frustrating work). To give you an idea of the kind of service one gets from Worldwide, one of the rear shocks on our TD started leaking, ever so slightly after having them worked by Worldwide and I sent it back to them. About a week later I got an e-mail from Peter Caldwell at Worldwide, stating that he could see that the shock was leaking but couldn't pinpoint the source, so it was going to take awhile to get the problem resolved. The shock finally came back after several weeks and hasn't leaked since. With the shock, Peter sent an explanation of why it took so long. In order to pinpoint the leak, he had set the shock up in an area of the business, where everyone passed by several times a day and informed everyone that each time they passed the shock, they were to work the arm up and down several times. After a couple of weeks of this exercise, enough leakage had occured to pinpoint where it was coming from and the problem was easily fixed - That's SERVICE!
Cheers,

I also used Worldwide; in addition to everything else they had the best price. Turnaround time was very quick. Easy arrangements to return the cores, too.

I have used Apple and World Wide rebuilt shocks. For my money I go with Peter Caldwell at World Wide. Peter is a fellow LBC owner.

Just took the back cover off to peek inside. There is about 1/8" of metallic sludge in there. (i used a little power magnet to play with sludge and made it move around like the blob and it was so cool that I...ahem...)
This is the first time the inside of this shock has seen the light of day since it was built. I cleaned it up & re-filled it. Pinpointed where it is leaking from and it's not the back cover. Looks like a re-build is in order.

I just a very nice email from Peter C. detailing how the pricing and shipping works. The prices are going up next week so I better send them out to save a few bucks. Nice to be informed of such info. They cannot send me shocks first as I guess they are out of stock. Luckily I've got an extra set that I can send to them so at least I can roll the car around on dollies still.

I agree, Peter C at worlwide for my shocks. Great guy great service.
