I had my 76 TR6 setting out last night during a nice rain. We didn't have wind with it,just a nice soaking rain. I had pulled the carpet out which was worn and had not put the new carpet in yet.(A good thing). This morning my seats were wet and just about the entire floor on both sides had water setting. I know my window seals aren't that good, but I had alot of water in the foot areas. I checked the drain tubes on the insides by the fenders ran a wire with a hook in them in both directions and no blockage. I also checked the drain holes on both ends of the top of the firewall with the wire, no blockage. I next checked the firewall for holes. Does anybody have any ideas or experienced this problem on the later TR6's?

So not to be flip, but this is why there are removable floor plugs. Weather sealing wasn't a strength back in the day, but it does sound like you are getting more than can be expected.

How are your inner fender seals, grommets etc?

Make sure to dry her out!

I didn't check the fender seals. As far as the floor plugs, if the carpet would have been in it, it wouldn't have mattered. Everything would have been soaked. I used towels to dry everything out and have fans on it as I speak.

The plugs on my TR4 floor pan are there for the post style jack to go through but I agree it sure is a good place to push water out.

Just goes ta show, roll-up windows are overrated

Touche', Randall!

Terry also has a TR3 so he has the best of both worlds. Did you get the soft top problem worked out and was the surrey on or was it the full top that you had on. I noticed you had been parking the 6 outside do you have the 3 at home now?

Eric:

I didn't get the soft top problem worked out. I had the surrey hard top on. It fits pretty good. The TR3 is back at home now, thats why the 6 is setting out. I took the 3 to the Old Settlers Rod Run in Mulvane last Saturday and came home with the TOP TWO award in the foreign class. That was a pleasant surprise.

My 74 TR6 leaks like crazy -when it wants to. I've had it sit out in the pouring rain for a whole weekend, without a drop inside, and again with puddles. At first I thought it involved sloping up or down in the driveway, but that doesn't seem to be it. I know wind will blow rain around the windows. It seems to do fine when driven in the rain, compared to sitting in it.

It stays pretty dry in the garage. The roll-up windows are an advantage; they keep the cat out of the hammock created by the cover.

That's great. We went to the poker run but got bupkis. Going to try for the Blacktop Nationals this weekend. Looking forward to the picnic. you must have a seal issue on the 6. Sounds crazy but before installing new carpet you might use a water hose to see where the leak is. Let the wife shower the car and you sit inside.

Tom,

I'd have to argue this point as my TR4A stayed dry on the inside and I had no garage for most of the 5+ years that I drove it daily. And this was without the benefit of the better TR6 seals around the door windows.

Terry,

If your seats were wet that would seem to indicate the water came in from either above some where (hardtop center section front or rear seal) or was blown in around the door windows. Any wetness on the tunnel carpet under the heater?

Scott:

I know that some came in where the windows seal the top. That would account for the wet seats. But I had even more in the footwells on both sides from the very front up to the seat tracks. The car was setting level when it rained. I still have the cardboard transmission cover in it and that was dry.

Terry,

How are you seals around the windscreen? I have seen a couple of 6's with older/even original rubber seals and they leak like a sieve. Usually though you will see water coming in through the corners of the windscreen on top of the crash pad that eventually makes it way to the floor.

Cheers,

M.. Pied Lourd:

I had put a new seal on the front windshield glass, replaced the front window to body seal and a new seal on the top of the front window when I replaced the dash cover several weeks ago.

Terry,

Not sure where to point you to although if it was leaking where the top seals against the window could that have run down the seal between the window and teh windshield and then down the front edge of the door and to the floor?

In the front floor area I would have suspected the drain tubes or at least water from that area since isn't that open on a late TR6 (no vent lid to close like on my TR4A)? Any evidence of wetness under the dash or in the kick panel carpet?

Well there you go - you just adjusted my expectations upwards.

You mean I don't have to be living in SoCal to drive one of these and stay dry?

mine TR6 had rusted holes in the plenum so the drain hoses did nothing, could that be one problem? also when you replace the windscreen gasket there is sealant that goes where the glass fit in the rubber, if you didnt use any it will leak. best way to find out where its leaking is get in the car and have some one spray it with a hose

Scott:

The first thing I thought was the tubes were not attached or plugged, but they were okay. I checked up under the dash and everything was dry. The kick panels were wet but I couldn't see where the water had come from. I'm going to have my wife hit it with the hose and see how wet I can get.
