Any thoughts on using a "wheel bearing locknut" wrench on the octagonal nuts on my knockoffs if I can find one? As close as I can figure, mine are 2 1/2 inch 8 point nuts. Do they come in different sizes?
So far I've found a 2 9/16 8 point, ATD Tools11205.02-9/16 8 point axle nut socket but still working on the 2 1/2.
While I know these are not for impact use, it would be nice t be able to get the wheels off with the car off the ground.
I did see the thread on using a torque wrench where some of this was discussed, but the locknut wrench was not discussed.

Why not just use the normal knockoff wrench, which is designed for impact use (with a BFH)? It will remove the nuts with the car off the ground. I use a (cheap) brass hammer with mine (HF) to help preserve the wrench, but a steel hammer will do.

Using an impact gun and one of those sockets would probably work (assuming you can find the right size), but I suspect is going to spoil the finish on the knockoffs.

Or the bigger $50 version? I already have a collection of brass and lead hammers.
I can find no size listing, only by vehicle. I am working on my Lotus Elan Plus 2.
I was also thinking of coating the inside of the socket with epoxy to protect the nut a bit. I take it that's not an issue with the hammer tool.

That's the tool I had in mind.

There might be some small marks, but my nearly new knockoffs appeared to be fine even after one of them bound up and we had to work in shifts pounding it off. The steel in the wrench isn't exactly soft, but it does deform some.

I can measure a knockoff tomorrow, if that will help. But AFAIK they are all the same size. The knockoffs come in two different threads, but both threads take the same wrench.
 
Thanks Randall. I'll put one of those on my next order and keep it in the car. I'll also try the 2 9/16 socket. Mine measure about 2.53 on my HF calipers. I can' see that the socket, even ahead of an impact wrench, would mar the nut surface more than the tool and hammer, and mine are far from perfect anyway. It would make a mess if it was too loose and spun on the nut and I don't know how flimsy those sockets are. I will post if any news. Measurements probably not necessary. Thanks anyway.

I must confess I wondered if this conversation was going in a different direction. Typically in our house I am the knock off tool. I knock paint off the ladder, tools off the bench, mugs off the counter. yup, knock off tool that's me. :jester: :rolleyes:
 
In addition to that I lose things. Here's one I'd be afraid to lose:
