Kingpin Bushings

Rod,
it's not unusual for the old bushings to fit a new kingpin. Mine fit well on my Bugeye, but the kingpins were discolored (blueish) from friction heat and it didn't cost much to do it right. I wanted my front end rebuild to outlast me, in fact that's the way I'm treating my entire restoration.

interesting I would not think there would be much heat from steering. The old king pins were not discolored. had to cut one apart to get it off the fulcrum pin. however that did not work as the threads were mangled in the wish bone. That is why I bought new wish bones. which turned out good as they are set up for a sway bar

Why would a complete NOS front end kit need the bushings "reamed"? The new bushings fit the new king pins just fine.

If you have a set and want to give it a try I'll tell you what I ran into. First, the old were very difficult to press out and the new hard to press in. I had to make up some special tooling for my press since I was afraid I would bend the spindle if I didn't. Then as Rut mentioned the bushings needed reaming. You want them right or you will end up with heavy steering and they really need to be reamed with a special reamer that reams them both in line. That is why I ended up scraping the top bushing with bluing and a home made bearing scraper.

Send them to Peter C. He gS tooling to remove and reinstall, to slug degrease and paint and fully assemble with new grease fittings. Turnkey process done right and IIRC significantly < $100 including shipping both ways and turnaround 1-2 days. After braking steering is most important. I had the rack lock up on me when I changed pinion gear and did not have enough shims in place. I know all about steering and the pucker factor when it does not work correctly.

BTW, except for the whole slave bolts spring safety bit you guys wrote it out well. (hint: you do NOT need slave bolts.)
