Just another one of life’s little conundrums.

God I hate this.

Well I’ve been sitting on this one for a long time and I guess there’s no denying it anymore.

Some of you might remember when I got custody of my 16 year old son at the beginning of last year. Well I never mentioned this but Jackie (my common law wife – never married) of 14 plus years, was really upset about the situation and within a month of my son moving in with us – Matt & I moved out at Jackie’s request. To be close we took an apartment a few miles away and during the week we'd stayed there and then spend the weekends at the house with Jackie & the girls.

On the weekdays after I got Matt moving for school in the morning, I’d go over to the house to help Jackie get the girls off to school before going to work. She'd take one and I'd take the other alternating back & forth. At the end of the day, I’d pick up one of the girls and take them to the apartment for a little while or take them back to the house and wait for Jackie to get home with the other young'n in tow. Occasionally we’d all (Matt too) do dinner during the week, but my son & I would almost always return to the apartment.

As uncomfortable and mind numbing as this all was I was sucking it up in an effort to stay with my wife & daughters and provide as stable an enviorment for my son as I could. This was our life for the last 14 months.

Well fast forward. Can’t say I didn’t see it coming but Jackie finally broke down last week & informed me one night that she can’t do it anymore and asked (check that - demanded) that it was over.

Jackie has agreed to joint custody of the girls, but my apartment is just a small two bedroom with little or no amenities for a teenager and two little girls. So I find myself in the market again for something bigger. For now I’m going to go with a rental (house, condo or the like) with three or four bedrooms, a yard and a two car garage.

So I guess my question(s) is - when is the best time for new listings of rental property in the classifieds. I was told the Sunday classifieds listings are best & the norm. But I would think that most folks would like to go to viewings on Saturday. So why wouldn’t Fridays be the best?

I've been out of the loop in this for a while is there anything I should know about renting a house or condo that is different than renting an appartment?

Man, I wish I could help but I'm not really up on rental matters. I just wanted to say I'm sorry for your situation, and I hope it turns around for you and works out for the best. If there's anything I can do to assist, please let me know. I will be in San Diego for ten days later this month so feel free to give a call.

Oh man... that really is a situation. Sorry to hear it. geesh.

Conundrum - yes. End of the world - no.

Use the net for your search - the newspapers have on-line classifieds and I'm sure the various real estate & rental agencies do, too. Maybe have Matt join in the effort.

Don't know about CA but here you're more likely to deal with an individual owner when renting a house whereas with an apartment it's usually a manager or agent of some sort.

Good luck.

Ungh Bret, I am so sorry to hear this. This really sucks. I know how much you love those girls & Matt - and how hard this past year must have been for you. You tried valiantly, I don't know that there is anything undone that you could have possibly done to make this work.

I don't have any advice, particularly on real estate in California, but I do want you to know that I'll keep you in my thoughts and send positive vibes your way. Hang in there.
~hug~

Sorry to hear about the woes, Bret.

When I was in my apartment hunting days (admittedly, this is in Utah) I checked the paper pretty much every day (online is a good thing). I also did a lot of driving around, looking for "for rent" signs. Last apartment I had I found that way--picked the area I wanted to be in and drove around, calling on all the signs I saw that looked interesting. Some of those were never in the paper, either.

Good luck.

Bret, try this. My dot used this website extensively while looking for a place to rent/buy. You can filter the search to your specifications.

Bret sorry to hear of your woes but if you just put
property rentals+california in your search engine you will come up with lots of sites with rental properties, hope this helps

Thanks for the all the kind words everyone (both here and off line) I really do appreciate it.

My biggest issue is staying in Poway so as to be close to the girls and allow Matt to finish out his last year & a half of High School. Good news is Jackie is working with me to lessen the impact on the girls and is allowing me to pretty much dictate what the custody situation will be like.

No to say that I'd ever wish her any real harm (after all she is the mother of my two little girls) but I'm wondering what I'd have to do to that voodoo doll to make someone's bum get bigger!. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rolleyes.gif /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif

ROFLMSAO! Now THAT is evil! I like the way you think.

Momma always told me that if I wanted to say in good with the woman I love to always compliment them. I can still here her now – “And whatever you do if you’re ever asked if their butt is too big – lie. I don’t care if she’s knocking over lamp shades when she walked into the living room – LIE!”

So if my mom was right about that then it seems logical that opposite line of thinking must be true too if I’m not worried about staying in someone’s good graces. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Buy her chocolates, Haagen Dazs, Ferrero Rocher, etc indirectly. Send your girls home with the stuff each time they visit, and you can bet that it'll find its way to its designated target..........

Jackie does like her chocolate and must say I've seen her cry in the past when she couldn't get in to her favorite jeans.
