Jag Mark 2 values

Hi everyone,
I've got a '62 Mk2 that's awaiting something ... either restoration, parting out, or being sold. I'm wondering how mk2 values are out in the real world so I can figure out if I can restore it or if I'd be better off parting it. If I do keep it, I'm wondering how certain resto choices may affect value, in particular:

a) paint color - should I stay w/ original color, or will a color change (which would be done well and completely) reduce value?

b) trannys - it's a slushbox now, but I would much prefer a manual. Would the tranny change reduce value, or not if I used a period correct Jag trans. I would prefer to use a later all synchro trans (OD if possible), or possibly even a 5 speed conv. I drove an XK120 w/ a Moss 'box once and it was about the worst trans I've ever driven, and that includes old American pickups w/ column-shift 3 speeds. I'm sure it wasn't in tip-top shape, but still..

If I do restore this car, its not something I plan on keeping forever, like my MGB, so I don't want to do anything that would negatively affect value. If I actually made money on it that would be great, but I'm not counting on it

Hello!

Depends on what you want I suppose and your capabilities and budget.

Mk2 Jags are absolutely wonderful cars. Amazing.. beautiful, fast, etc.

I think that only a WW2 Fighter Plane costs much more per square foot to restore though. There's a White 3.8 Auto in South Florida that is perfect and stunning. I would imagine that making it perfect cost more than a new XK8. And it isnt worth that much!

As far as Mods.. it's your car. Do with it as you please. As far as Value.. a real MOD 3.8 with Wires in BRG is the most Valuable Mk2. OTOH, if this car needs it all, you can get very far over your head with it very easily. Mk2s rust. Your profile says Chicago.. How bad is it?

Drivetrains aint cheap. But keeping "correct" parts shouldnt hurt it, but a Real MOD car will be worth more. I would use the Synchro box if you can (Im not sure if the 4.2 XKE box will fit or not) Agreed that the Moss 'box stinks.

The real $$ on a Mk2 is in wood, leather, bodywork and chrome... How bad IS this car? It may make more financial sense (If that is a concern) to sell it and buy one that's already nice.

Bill:
You have to negate the value of what an auto( no matter what marque) is worth before restoration.
Usually a restoration is for love of the car, before monetary value. Very few ownwers recoup any return on a restoation. IE: My Mark 1- I've had for 26 years am restoring presently all work will be mine will cost $20G easily but everything will be restored, cleaned or replaced where needed, only because I like the Jag and have had it so long and will not buy the unimpressive new cars that cost 3x as much.

Bill, Wade:

I think to restore something for profit, you'll have to do the work for somebody else, you know; spend their money. But, you can probably find some older american iron and turn a small profit, or like the kids today, early 90's and tweak'em.

Larry,

Oh I totally agree with you! I mean, I'm probably going to have over $20K in my 1959 Vauxhall Velox when it's done.. and be buried up to my eyes in it. But, to me, that's not the point.

But if you were looking to a restore a car and then sell it not too long afterwards and not lose your butt on it.. I would think a Jaguar Mk2 is the wrong way to go...

Hello Wade,
I also own a 1962 (registered, manufactured 1961)
MK 2, which I am starting to restore.
Values in the UK, vary tremendously with the model. 2.4 Autos being the lowest (say ÂŁ5 to ÂŁ8,000 for nice to superb) to 3.8 manual\O.D on wires (ÂŁ12 to ÂŁ25,000 or more for the best)
Mine's a 3.8 man\O.D. on disc wheels. (Wouldn't give you tuppence for wire wheels in my opinion)
Also, I do not have any problems with the Moss box and would personally prefer a manual overdrive setup to a 5 speed. My daily driver is a Triumph 2.5 sedan, manual with O.D. on third and top. I rate that higher than the ZF 5 speed I had on my DB5.
good luck,
Alec

Wade,

I guess the big question is...

What does it look like now? How bad is it?

As far as color and the like, I say paint it what YOU like, everyone else be ****ed! A BRG Mk2 is a stunning machine IMO.

How does it look now? You name it, it needs work - maybe even a lot of work!

Agreed on colors, the chrome looks great over a dark colored car.

Thanks for the comments so far, I'd love to hear more.

I'm not looking to just restore the car and sell it, if I do restore it. I would drive and enjoy it for a while at least, but if something ever came up- like another car I might want, Stew's college, need for space, ?? - I'd like to not bleed money from the sale. With my '70 'B, I did all the work except for the machining and shooting the paint and if I were patient I could get my money out of it, possibly more. Were I to restore the Jag, I'd do the same work myself - well (including wood, interior, etc.)and wonder if the Jag $ situation would be similar to the MG's $ situation.

Sounds like transmission change to a Jag manual wouldn't necessarily affect value. Then again, one advantage to the auto is that its so common a unit it could be fixed nearly anywhere reasonbly. Automatics are something I'm not going to do myself!

I ask about color change because most of the Jag folks I've met at shows have been fairly ... uptight. So I wonder how important 'factory original color' would be to the Jag community/marketplace. The car is refrigerator white (is that the Jag name for the color?

) which on one hand is pretty blah in my eyes. On the other hand its obviously easier to stick with the same color and white is easier to work with than, say, black.

Thanks, Wade

Wade:
Build it like you want, keep original old parts not reused for future owner. Some companies make huge profits on Jag upgrades.

For Example: 4-pot discs, bushed suspensions, XJ6 automatics, newer interiors, fuel injection, A/C etc. They sell these with polish and bells for $90,000 and up.

If your going to use it for yourself and fun, do what you feel. It can't be any worse than a total concours driven to the end, but, it'll handle these highways and streets of today and you probably do it proud.
