It was free so who cares...getting head studs out

In dismantling my "free" TR3 engine, I got all but two of the head studs out. I finally said do or die, drove one of those self-gripping hex-headed caps on the top of the last ones, fitted a 1" socket on it with a 1/2" drive and a 4 foot long cheater bar. After a lot of groaning, the suckers broke aloose! Whew! What surprised me is those stud are coarse threaded down in the block. Tell me these studs (two different lengths) are available. I plan on taking the liners out as well and if all goes as planned, will get some Mahle 87mm ones. (apparently these are very difficult to get) Slow process, ton of gunk on this engine, especially in the area of the chain cover. From what I can tell, this baby has a lot of miles on it, was just parked and abandoned. Would be nice if I can end up with a really hot little engine/tranny. Hmmmm, how would that fit in my TR6?

Sounds to me like your going to need another car to put that motor in /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

The studs are available an so are liners. British Frame and Engine is a good source for the piston/liner kits (bfekeng@aol.com). The gunk on the chain cover might just be proper as I believe Triumph used that to deaden vibrations so don't remove it till you check with someone. Ken at BFE wouyld know.

It's amazing how robust these engines are. There's very little you can do to kill them. I guess they're like a Friday the 13th or Nightmare on Elm Street character...you can try to kill it, but it keeps on coming back.

Aloose? Is that a Cajun term?

If you want a really clean block try redi Strip or a company that uses the same process. A hot tank will remove the gunk. The electro chemical process will remove evey bit of rust and scale leaving it looking like a fresh casting. I guess you could say it will get all the rust aloose.

i think one wife is more than enough. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gifi guess i'm old fashioned! one work list from the wife is too much. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/pukeface.gif i am going to go with 89mm pistons and liners for my street car. darryl uprichard of racetorations highly recommends this size for these motors. gives the valves more room.BFE sells them at a decent price. as far as engine studs go, i would get ARP studs from someone. you do not have to get these from a british supplier. i got a price from my local speed shop of $135 canadian /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cowboy.gif(if you shop around you should be able to do better than that-unfortunately the british suppliers seem to charge much more for the same parts).
