Introduction 59 bugeye project

I came to this forum a few years ago and recently found the site again. Forgot my old password and created a new account. I am excited about the level of interaction that I have already had with you experienced chaps giving me the information that I need. And very quickly I might add.

I live in Indiana and this is a car that is 30 years in the making. My father has built a countless number of cars and growing up I have always wanted to do the same. He bought this car just before I was born an had hoped that I acquired the passion for cars that he once had. Well,,, I have. I started this car when I was a freshman in high school and had no idea what I was doing. Moving on to all of the time consuming things that I NEEDED to do in high school the sprite was put aside. I restored a 52 Chevy and 2 years after it was finished traded it for couple of MGs. I made one out of the two and was hooked on British cars. I started on the sprite again about 6 years ago, only to be put in the back of the garage as other cars came into my possession as "higher priorities." I was also in college at the time and had less money and time than I do now.
Now I am out of school, a teacher, and I promised this little car the time and patience a little over a year ago. (I have less time and about the same amount of money.) I also promised myself and the car that this will be the only one until it is finished. (A monogamous relationship I guess.) So, anyhow, here I am and here it is. Basically it was started in Sept. 05. It hit the ground today for the first time in 7 years. Thanks to everyone that has answered questions so far and many more to come. Enjoy the pics.

P.S. click on the attached pics before scrolling down to see the progress of the car. Hmm... I wish I had pictures of what she looked like before I sand blasted her.

Looking good so far.
But, you've got the front upper trunnions on backwards. Turn them 180 degrees, and you'll get rid of all that positive camber.
Don't feel bad, we've all done it!
Look at this picture, and you'll see that the hollow portion of the trunnion faces outboard.

No, not a Rolls but a Bugeye will do alright for now.

Thanks Jeff, seems pretty stupid after you pointed it out. I figured that it would need a lot more weight than that 1275 could add to straighten her out!! I guess when I was fitting them in it just looked like they went the way I had them. Makes sense, thanks again!

No problem. As I said, we've all done it! Some of us more than once.
Consider it an initiation rite. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

I guess! I think that I should have had one of my students (3rd grade) come over and check it out. I was one of those kids that would try and put a square peg in the round hole. (At least I would have used a saw-saw to make it work though.) /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

What do you teach? I find an enormous number of teachers in the amateur restoration business. I guess its the learning curve and the fact that this certainly is always teaching me new things. Several of my friends (who are teachers) are into restoring/rebuilding cars. Your project is admirable. I look forward to following your progress.

I'm in the transition to becoming a teacher, but want to finish my cars first, as my wife is also a teacher.
Your restoration is an inspiration and is looking really good, I am a sucker for BE's with minilites.
When does the motor go in?

WOW!! She's gonna be a black Bugeye!

Thank you sir.
I teach 3rd grade.
My father was a teacher and a professor.
I personally like to build cars for the recreation. I appreciate the engineering that went into the original design and hope to improve on what is already there. (I realize that I am only doing what has already been done in most cases.) The best part of course, is the drive!! And a very close second is the build.

Actually, I know I am going to get a lot of flack, she is going to be silver. I painted the the wheel wells and the engine compartment black for personal preference. Mixing a little American with a little British. I have a thing for black and red.

Teaching allows for some extra time to build cars.

Oh boy, another one comes to life.

Welcome, and nice looking Bugeye! I really like the red brake calipers and drums, might have to do something like that myself...

Great color.....

Welcome to our BE land.

What kinda powerplant are you planning on installing?

Patrick

Just noticed you are from Indy.

Hello neighbor.

Glad to hear it wasn't a Hemi - hehehe

Any Questions, that you have, please feel free to ask.

Patrick

Hey Trevor.

Thanks Patrick.

I'll tell ya, the upper trunnion solution was great. I would have probably waited until the motor and trans were in place and then tried to figure out why the tires were still so crazy. Already fixed!!!!!

I did that a few weeks back as well and they caught me.
