Intermittent Electric Faults

Aloha All,

My MG is being tempermental and the windshield wiper, turn signals are working only occasionally. It has been raining often lately so thehigh humidity and age (harness replaced about 20 to 25 years ago) may have degraded the electrical connections. I have correct voltage on both sides of the accessory circuit at the fuse box. If my diagnosis is correct, I guess the cure will be crawling under the dash and cleaning the bullets and connectors, cleaning all the ground connections and other connections. Does any one have other suggestions?

Safety Fast,
Dave

start cleaning and then protect them with a good electrical grease. different kinds can be bought at your local home stores, don't use much, it doesn't take alot. petroleum jelly can be used in a pinch. If you do this you won't have to do it again for a long time

Check the switches themselves first since you already checked the fuses. Thats usually the culprit in mine.

Thanks Chuck, It was about 25 years ago when I first made all the connections. You just can't get things that last anymore.

if you do find it to be the switches, there is an article on servicing them here (shamless website self promotion

Aloha All,

Well, I got everything working again when I turn the switch. No new parts needed. Since everything that was intermittent was powered through the accessory circuits (green Wires) I started there. I also discovered that the brake lights were not always working. I cleaned all the connections to the direction signal relay (also tied in to the brake light circuit) and the connections to the turn signal switch. I then cleaned all the bullets and connectors in the circuit. I think this is what solved the problem. I guess I need to add this procedure to the periodic maintenance schedule. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Safety Fast,
Dave
