TR6 Interesting.. Someone wants to buy my TR6

OK, this is something that really took me by surprise. One of my good friends father in law wants to buy my TR6. I just got the call that if I was interested to come up with a reasonable price.

Now a couple years ago, I would have never even thought about selling the old girl... She's a good car and I love driving it. Enter stage right two boys. Now I have a 6 year old and a 2 year old that will need riding around, so logistics are going to get increasingly hard as my youngest gets older. Plus I think my wife has ridden in it maybe 5 times; again mostly because of the kids.

It would be nice to have something that the whole family could fit in and enjoy.

So I suppose if I could get enough money for it, I might sell it. Which brings me to my point; How much is my TR6 worth? I make no secrets about it NOT being original, but its awesome shape. Here's a small list of features/mods:

Engine & Drive train: Balanced, rebuilt, 10:1 compression, triple ZS carbs, roller rockers, GP2 cam, Mallory dizzy, stainless headers with custom stainless exhaust, rebuilt J type overdrive (originally had an A Type), rebuilt diff with Quaife LSD, CV half shafts

Chassis: Rust free. Completely rebuilt/replaced braking system with stainless lines and alloy rear drums.

Interior: Randy Keller dash. John Skinner full leather interior (including panels) with matching top cover and tonneau cover.

Other: Electric fan, complete lighting wiring overhaul with relays, Cibie headlights and driving lamps.

Exterior: Nice paint: 7.5 out of 10. Great chrome, new Dayton chrome wire wheels. Top is in great shape.

I also have a rust-free hardtop that needs restoration. I’ve currently got about half the parts to completely restore it.

I don't want to publish what I have in it.. I know I won't get that out of it, but what do you guys think?

I'll post some reference pics if needed.

Very difficult to answer that but in general I would expect a sales price on a car that wasn't actually for sale would be quite a bit higher than one you were trying to get rid of.

Some price points I just experienced locally as I helped a couple who were looking for a TR6. They looked at a beautifully photographed but rusty in person TR6 that the owner was wanting $15500 for. Ended up with a very nice mostly original (original paint) TR6 with very minor rust (on the floorboards) for $9000.

Modifications are also hard to price as it assumes that they are what the buyer wants.

You say you won't get out of it what you have in it but since he came to you I would consider that as a minimum starting point... i.e. he couldn't build your car for that.

Seriously, that car is beautiful. Those chrome wires look great on it. Good luck trying to put a price on it. You have to hope he knows this model of car well and how nice yours actually is in comparison to others.

.

don't sell, you'll regret it later. buy another car to haul around kids in.

Shannon,

I agree with Philman, don't sell the car. You might get high teens for it which is a nice chunk of change but you'll never get what you've invested or be happy with the transaction. Keep the car and find another route for the family transportation. Besides, we'll miss your exploits on the forum if you sell.

1. It's only worth what someone is willing to pay.

2. If you are going to think about selling it, what will it cost to buy one back In the same condition) if you get "sellers remorse"?

3. Remember that there are only a handfull out there that are in the same condition and you will never buy them, cause mine is one of them and it ain't for sale. And neither are the others for obvious reasons.

4. Will they give you at least $30,000 for yours? Because that's the minumum of what it will cost you to get another in the shape of yours and if you would have to pay that much, why shouldn't someone else??????

JMHO - keep it and leave it to the kids when you're too old to drive it. There won't ever be any more made.

Tell you what, LDL. I don't blame the guy for wanting that car. Sell the kids instead.

Give him a riculious price. If he takes it - you won't
have as many regrets.Take at least 3 months to make your
decision - think it out carefully.Otherwise,in about 3 years, your Wife will have to hear "Why did you ever let me
sell the TR?" over & over again.
I know,I sold a Healey 100-6 back in the '70's for $2100.I kick myself for not keeping it.

Shannon, as a point of reference, a friend recently sold his 1973 TR6, which he bought for $17,000.00 about 5 years ago. He is in New Orleans. He sold the car by posting on various forums (not BCF, he didn't know about it!) and on TRF website. (I think the buyer, in Arizona, picked it off that site.)
He got $22,000.00! And that was coming down a little bit. The car was nice, very original looking, with a few aftermarket gizmos, like a weird dash light setup, cupholders that looked out of place, etc. Totally stock engine with a WalMart battery! The heater did not work, so whoever restored it did a body on frame. I looked under the dash and there was a bird's nest of wiring. The car was a good 5-footer. Paint was nice. I kicked his butt in judging for 4 years running at our car show.

I say no less than 20K. Remember, totally stock always brings more because that is what the old fots, who can afford it, want.

Good luck.

I may be doing the same one day. Maybe.

I just had a conversation with a friend in the MG club a couple of months ago. Someone had offered him more than he thought his BGT was worth and he was thinking of taking it.

It was clear that he was attached to it, loved driving it and it was part of his family but he was seeing $$.

I asked him what he thought it would sell for if he listed it for sale at a later date. His response was only 2K less than he had been offered. I told him he was no longer making a 10K decision but only a 2K choice and that was nothing compared to his attachment to the car.

He kept the car and sleeps much better!

Hmmmm. Some nice thoughts here. I honestly don't have any idea what to even ask for it if I decide to sell it.

Lots of mixed feelings here so say the least. I just don't have enough room to buy another car unless of course I kick my wife's car out of the garage and in that case my Triumph might just become my bed!!

When you have something for over 5 years, you do get very attached to it... even if it does stink! My wife says that I'd be miserable if I sell it and she's right if I didn't get a replacement soon.

I think what AngliaGT said is a smart thing... wait a bit then decide. Heck, I don't even know if we'd be in the same ball park as far as price.

Of course, it doesn't hurt to have a couple of Hooter's Girls helping to display your car at the show. It's all in presentation.

A little humour.

On another point, I very recently saw a car at another show that was really, really nice. Not original to the untrained eye (he had his overdrive switch in the gear shift knob, aftermarket seats, etc.) but very, very nice. He paid a whole bunch for the car. He wouldn't say but his wife intimated that it was well very 20K.,

Shannon, I don't see the problem here. Keep the Six and
purchase a Jeep Wrangler 4 door Rubicon for a vehicle the
family can fit in and enjoy. You could all go "boulderin'"
where you live; a boat hitch a few years down the road
plus instantly you'll have another classic vehicle to tend
to. Wranglers are NEVER out of style.

Keep the TR.

Dale,

We have a older Land Rover Disco that we toy around in occasionally (almost like a Jeep). But the Triumph is pretty much my only hobby and it would be nice to be able to involve the family a little more.

With that being said, if I replaced the Triumph, I would probably still be the only one going to club meetings. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/nonod.gif

Shannon-

I know where you are. My primary hobby is fishing and Wendy
has been in my boat(s) three times in almost 20 years of
ownership. She loves to eat fish at restaurants and buy
fish at the grocery. Won't take a bite if it is caught
fresh on my boat.

BUT Wendy really does encourage me to enjoy my hobby.
She is just getting close to enjoying the TR, now that it
does not break down every 7 miles.

Unless it is a financial issue; you will regret selling the
TR6. I could not part with Amos; even after all the heart
aches and tremendous financial outlay.

Keep the six.

Shannon,

In case you didn't get the subliminal message in my previous post....keep the TR6.

Look at it this way. These cars are going up in value and demand and down in supply, slowly but surely, every year. You can always sell it a year from now for the same or probably more money than he will pay you today.

Unless he gives you the $30K that I recommended earlier. You could buy a nice new car (Mustang GT convertible) that will seat more of the kids for that money, but it will still never be your TR6.

If you must sell it,I'd look into a Stag,or a
Rover 3500,or maybe a 4 seater Healey.
And that's only if you decide to sell.

I was thinking about getting rid of mine recently. SWMBO was making pointed comments about it 'still' not running. I decided to keep it in the end, mainly because it's paid for so it costs me nothing (unless I log into the Moss website).

I think that unless you need the cash, you should do the same - if you can't hook them with a different car, then keep the one that makes you happy - even if you only get to take her out once a month...
