TR6 Interesting.. Someone wants to buy my TR6

Think of all those strangers that approach you when you are driving the car. The ones that say, "I used to have one of these and I sold it when I got married."

Have you ever met one who was glad he sold the car?
 
When my first kid was born, I realized that we were not using the TR3. At that point I had had that car for 11 years and driven it for 6(it was the first car I ever owned even if it was a basket case when I first got it). I opted to put the car in long term storage and wait for life to get to a point where we could use it again.

Fast forward 6 years and one more kid. I put four point belts in the 'back' and all four of us would go in the TR3. A few more years, the kids outgrew the back and I got a TR4 as well so we could all go 'Triumphing'. We never did all go out in the two cars at once even after four years of having both.

All this to say I do not regret keeping it. Even though the money would have been nice back then with the young family.

Keep it, is my advice. When the kids are bigger they will thank you.
 
Based on the the feedback that I'm getting on the forum and after a long talk with the wife, I've decided not to pursue selling the TR.

I don't really have the space, or the money really to have another car, even though I'd love to get my hands on a 63 Lincoln Continental convertible! The values of these cars are going nowhere but up it's probably silly right now to contemplate selling it... FYI, the NADA classic car value for these cars has gone up nearly $10,000 in less than 5 years!!

I really do appreciate all the guidance!!
 
If you let this car go, I think you'll regret it for the
rest of your life. It is very nice and you likely
would never own another like it.

Buy a temporary cover of sorts, do what you must, but
please, please don't let her go!

Finance another vehicle. You only get what you go for,
so go for another vehicle and find a way to keep that
beautiful car.
 
I've had some twists and turns in life the past 10 years or so, and at times the TR6 didn't seem to fit, at all--space, time, money, or all of the above. However, my girlfriend (and now wife) always said, "the car may not make sense right now, but it will later and some point, and you'll be glad you have it then." Great advice I say. And in keeping it, I'm attached to it even more, having been just about the only thing constant through it all!

And wow, TR6 values must have really risen the past few years. I paid $4400 for my signal red, rust-free 71 in great shape back in 97. Other than a new top and refinishing the dash, all original, although I'm finally rebuilding the engine and doing the toyota transmission conversion. Wonder what it's worth now... have no idea what TR6s are going for these days!

Any recent examples with details about the car?

To my way of thinking there are two values.

One will be what someone is willing to pay and that's what you can get for it in the end.

Two would be what it would cost to replace it if it were stolen, totaled, whatever. I would have a hard time selling something for less, even though there may not be a buyer at that number.
 
I don't even know how much I've sunk into this car the past 4 - 5 years. I honestly shudder to think, but it I'm sure it would be north of 25k. Future plans included a frame off in a few years, but it would be pretty minor for a frame off, considering that pretty much anything that can be unbolted and rebuilt or replace has.

Paul, its your option number 2 that scares me the most. What happens if it gets stolen or totaled? I don't have clasic car insurance because I tend to drive it a lot, but maybe I need to scale my driving down a bit in order to protect the investment? Something to think about.

Which of course brings up the topic of what exactly would replace it. Can another TR3A be the one my late wife bought for me ? The same car I put together, complete with my own bodges, mistakes, and improvements that didn't work out ? (Plus some that did, of course.) I had total confidence in the car and it's ability to get me home; didn't think anything of hopping in for a 2000 mile drive (well, except for wear and tear on the driver /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif ). And short of doing the same thing all over again, I couldn't have that kind of confidence in any TR3 put together by someone else, no matter how nice it looked.
 
I had decided a while back, that if were to ever build another I'd start with a new frame and work myself up. I'd don't know what I'd end up with, but it would be tons-o-fun!

Please don't do that! I'm always so inspired by people who have really nice cars, but drive them a lot! That's what they're for, and in your final days, you're probably not going to be glad you drove your TR6 less than you could have.
