Well, that might be exaggerating just a bit. "Stated value" is a "not to exceed" amount; the actual value of the car is determined as of the date of loss but you are only insured to the stated value.TR4A_IRS said:
I had stated value when my 3A got totaled. Mercury found 4 similar cars that had sold recently, and used the average of their sales price as the value of my car. I had the opportunity to contest that, the agent even asked if I would like to supply some recent sales information of my own ("comps" in real estate terms), but since their valuation was more than the value I had stated, it seemed kind of pointless
And it actually worked out reasonably well for me, since they just wrote me a check for the full amount (plus paying off the tow truck and body shop) and let me keep the car. Meaning I still have my 4-synchro OD gearbox, Fidanza flywheel, gear-drive starter, modified wheels and so on; plus lots of brake and suspension parts that my replacement car needed.

I had checked with a friend who works upper-level in a BIG insurance company locally.
He told me while this was going on that some agent had their head where the sun don't normally shine.
There IS no such EPA refusal.
He also told me (as has been borne out here) that the truth was not what was originally said.....he told me they probably didn't want to insure an old car.
So, I waited, and sure enough.
Reason I worked it from this end, you never know what the EPA or any other gummint or non-gummint branch is going to do.
Case in point, and I remember when this happened well, Old Cars or Hemmings had a big campaign a number of years ago.
Seems Wisconsin wanted to pass a law that your windscreen wipers could not change speed with motor speed.
Which totally removed old cars with vacuum wipers from the pool.
The magazine and campaign was successful, but, like I said, when this came up, first thing I thought (and checked on) was some new "rule" to get us and our old cars off the road.
