Installing Front rotors to hubs

I'm in the process of installing my brake rotors to the front hubs (later 5 lug hubs). My hubs have studs that are installed from the front of the hub with nuts on the backside. Should there be washers under the nuts? The Moss diagram only shows the stud with a lock nut, no washer?
 
Interesting question - the Bentley Book, Pg. 263 refers to a "spring washer" aka lock washer. However the Moss catalog shows a lock washer for the BJ8 1/2" rotor but no lock washer for the earlier 3/8 disc - don't know why they would be treated differntly.
I have always used lock washers but now I'm not sure they are needed...

A locknut holds better than a spring (split) lockwasher. Plain washers are only necessary where you need to reinforce thin, i.e. sheet, metal.
I like the all-metal oval type, grade 8. I've been told these are the kind NASA uses:
