Got my euro carbs on (crabs). After some dissusion with the floats, things seem to be acceptable for the moment except, once it warms up and stop for a few minutes, it spits and sputters for a while. They were waxstat, but I cut the bottom out of the thermo part, emptied the goop and rubber and put a penny 'cross the bottom. I think I might have a vapor lock problem cause it ran fine last night when it was cool.

All in all I'm pleased for now ( if I can get it fixed).

Low and mid range is FANTASTIC !!!! I never would have thought it could be this torquey. I feels like it might not pull as hard above 4K as the DGV did, but that might just feel like that cause it pulls so good down low.

The carbs will have to come back off for final massaging; throttle shafts bushed, new jets and bearing, linkage issues.

Best mod to date for sure.

Do it if you're thinking about it. it really makes it feel like a sports car (when it's not cutting out.)

My computer is down ( never beat on a laptop) so I might not be back for a day or two.

Yeah - putting in the performance head and the pair of HIF4's really gave my engine a wake up call. And I'm getting all around better mpg too!!
Weird having the British carbs on the Nissan motor - but it sure works!

Really wakes the car up doesn't it?

m

Yes it does. It seems I'm having allot of trouble w/ vaporlocking though even with the correct heat shield.

You may want to consider a rear mounted electric fuel pump to beat the vapor lock.

Doug, it seems the bolws themselves are getting too hot. If I let it sit a few minutes after shut off, it sputters immeadiatly upon firing and clears up in a few seconds (10-20). I don't like having the pump up front (pO installed), but really don't want to cut my fuel line or run wiring to the back. I might just have to break down and do it.

something wrong with the stock mechanical on the block?

I am trying a shortcut on the 1500 Spitfire concerning under-hood heat. I did the HS4 swap and probably should have wrapped the header when we were doing the engine swap. But I didn't. Instead, I was going to make a heat shield. I have so many projects that I put fabricating on hold and I bought a piece of insulating blanket on eBay. I made a trapezoidal blanket that covers the header and isolates it (more or less) from the carb.

This is on the Spitfire that my son drives. He has complained that for the first few moments, the engine runs a bit rough on a hot start compared with a cold start in the morning. However, once some fresh fuel is in the bowls the car appears to run fine.

Same thing here. I used Kaowool instead. It worked good, but reflected exhast heat back towards the engine and it ran hotter ( too hot). Mke sure he keeps an eye on engine temp.

I'm experementing w/ the heater vale further forward at the front to cut off flow through the intake to reduce heat buildup. So far so good but I haven't had a chance for a really good test run.

Having an electric pump cuts down on hot start issues if you let the pump run a few seconds before starting the car.

I gotta pull the carbs back off anyway, so I'l wrap the exhast manifold then. Gonna do an oil cooler too.

Do you have pictures of your setup yet?
I've always gotten a lot of great feedback by posting pics, sometimes people will see something that I totally miss.

If it can't be fixed with a hammer your problem could be software related... Just sayin'

Kellysguy,

I am running a fresh air intake on the right side of the car- 4 inch hose to the rad support. Just like the fresh air hose for the heater box. This one ends in front of the carb intakes. All it does is supply fresh air to the carb side of the engine and (may) possibly help with cooling. I am running a header with no wrap and a heat shield, mechanical pump and have no vapor lock problems.

BTW kellysguy, I presume the title of this thread really is broad Scots for "I just wet myself?"

I have been thinking about that but I can't find my heater tube. Our climates are vastly different too, but it's been relativly cool here lately. The car is running hotter than normal which I find strange. It's topped all the way up w/ collant too.

Reset your timing- webbers like to run with a bit of advance- not so much for the SU's

Hey Billy,

Sure your not running lean at cruise? What needles are you running? Hows the plugs looking?
