I recently ordered a new Makita 7" Grinder online. I ordered ONE grinder and paid for one grinder. My order arrived today and, to my surprise and bemusement, when I opened the rather large box, I discovered they had sent me TWO new Makita grinders.

So, from the site contact form, I sent them the following note:

To whom it may concern, my order for the Makita GA7021 7 in. Angle grinder arrived today. It seems someone in the warehouse made a mistake and accidentally sent me TWO grinders. They were packed together in separate Blue and Black Makita boxes, but both boxes were in a larger white Makita box. As much as I'd love to have a free Makita grinder obviously I need to return one of them. If you could see your way clear to provide me with a pre-paid shipping label (UPS, USPS, or FedEx), I will return one of these units. Best Regards,

About an hour later I get this note from them in my email:

Hello,

Thank you for contacting xxxxxxxx!

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience that this has caused you. xxxxxxx does not knowingly ship incorrect packages or that are not complete with the items listed on our website. Our products are pre-packed by the manufacturers before they are shipped to our warehouse.

We thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation with us at this time.

If we can be of further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us.

So I just replied with this:

Either you did not read/ understand my first note, or you have sent me a canned response. PLEASE READ CAREFULLY: You did not send me an incomplete order. I am NOT asking for a replacement and I don't need parts.I ordered one Makita 7 in. Grinder. You sent me TWO grinders. I only paid for one. I WANT TO RETURN THE SECOND GRINDER. I ONLY PAID FOR ONE GRINDER. I WANT TO RETURN THE SECOND GRINDER BUT I WANT TO KEEP ONE OF THEM! IF I RETURN THE SECOND GRINDER, I DO NOT NEED A REFUND SINCE I DID NOT PAY FOR IT. I hope this make sense. I must keep one grinder because I need it for a project and can't wait. But because I am an honest person, I don't want to keep the second grinder that I didn't pay for (and don't need). Please read this and don't send a canned reply.

I don't want to send them both back and get a refund! I need to keep one because I need it now (not a week from now) but I also don't want to keep a grinder I did not pay for. My guess is they didn't really read the first note and just assumed I wasn't a refund and send a canned reply back. I'm hoping they don't make this harder than it needs to be.

I had a similar experience with Bed Bath and Beyond a couple of years ago.
I ordered a Cusinart coffee maker online and two separate boxes arrived at my house; one coffee maker in each box. Each shipping label had the EXACT same tracking number from the same shipping carrier.
I called customer service and explained like you did that I received two but ordered one.
I was told that it was IMPOSSIBLE to get two boxes with the same tracking number. I assured customer service that’s exactly what happened. Since the person I spoke to didn’t know how to handle it, she said no need to return.
You have done your due diligence… the ball is in their court.

Oh, they will make it harder. Bought a TV at Best Buy. While still in store, salesman came up to us and said the charge did not go thru and would we mind running the card again. We did. Short time later, our credit card company confirmations showed two consummated charges. Went back in and they reversed the second charge. Arriving home 2 hours later, credit card company account online did not show the first transaction. Called the store, called Best Buy corporate, went to the store. All we spoke to said 'we don't really have any apparent way to fix this and please don't make us try; please keep the TV.' We went to the store and bought another TV and made them put it back on the shelf. We were happy, but I suppose when they had to sell the thing, which no doubt contained a bar or QR code specifically containing the serial number of the contents, they had a helluva time. Another time we took an inexpensive item back to Lowes but they actually recorded it as the return of another item on our account and credited us about $600.00. Called the store and corporate. Again both begged us not to make them try to reverse the mistake. We had corporate confirm this direction by email and we now have a very inexpensive patio set on our screened porch.

Years ago,I ordered a video camera from one of the ads in a video magazine.
A few weeks went by,& still no camera.I then called the business,& kept getting a
"looped" message.
I then called someone at the video magazine who told me that the business
had declared bankruptcy,so I quickly contacted the Postal Inspector in New York, where
the business was located,& filed a complaint with them.I then contacted the VISA people,
who credited my account with the full amount.
Some time later,I received a check for $500 from the bankruptcy court.I then called
someone at VISA,& asked them how I should send the $500 to them. The reply was -
"Keep it".I replied "What did you say?" They replied "Keep it",& so I did, although
I thought that they should have taken it,& applied it to someone who was having a problem
paying their bill.

I purchased a cell phone through Ebay, came from China, looked the mutts nuts in the listing, all singing all dancing, had all th toy
It arived two out of the three cameras on it were fake, half the stuff didnt work.
I returned it through ebay, could not make contact with the seller. and after contacting Pay Pal, they refunded me.
three months later i received the parcel back with loads of yellow stickers all over it, the jist of it was it could not be delivered as
the seller was no longer there. Contacted Ebay, they said "keep it or list it".
I gave it to my niece in the Philippines the next time we went on holiday.

A more aware version of the same story. In the early 2000's we moved to the Greater Orlando Area for a few years. The move involved me flying in and out of Orlando airport about 6 times in three weeks. One of the times my watch quit. In the departure lounge of MCO was a store where everything was $10. watches, scarves, hats, everything. So I nips into the store and buys a $10 watch - complete with the extra dials - day and second. Get home and realize they don't work. No problem, I will be back in three days.

Walk into the store and asks the employee about the extra dials. In the most deadpan voice you can possibly imagine the employee looks at me and says:

'It's a $10 watch. It tells time.'

I guess I got what I paid for. :bananawave:

I once worked for a company who bought a retiring employee a fake Rolex watch as a retirement gift. The watch stopped working after a few days. Fortunately, he no longer had to get to work on time

That's wrong at so many levels.

I have a friend (a number actually) who were given gold watches in retirement and promptly stopped wearing watches. I rarely wear a watch any more - which frustrates Mrs JP because watches (and pens) were her go to Christmas and birthday gifts.

It is an odd gift if you think about it.

I had an instructor in a college certificate program who was also the chair of the Board of the local Ronald McDonald House, she would give new Board members watches the day they came on the Board - so that people would ask about them and they could speak of the organization.

I received a watch upon graduating college. On the back it is engraved with a thoughtful message and signed “Love, mom and dad”.
I’m wearing it right now.

Good grief! They are sure making it hard to do the right thing! I returned the second grinder, making it VERY clear before I returned it (and even including a note in the box) that I DID NOT NEED A REFUND! So, they got the return and what do they do:
