I'll never let anyone drive my car again.......

Re: I'll never let anyone drive my car again......

Most tools I've loaned were hand tools, never an 'instrument'. In spite of that, they have come back damaged or "lost"...

Now I use a 'sign-out sheet' with replacement cost. If they're unwilling to agree to it, no tool. Hard to make someone who thinks: "It's just a tool (breadpan, car, WHATEVER)!" comprehend that (for instance) a Snap-On 7/16"~1/2" line wrench will cost +$20 to replace... all they know is: THEY NEED it, and I HAVE it. I've grown to look 'em in the eye and tell 'em they put a replacement CASH deposit in my hands ahead of the 'borrowing'. That usually sends 'em packin'. I don't care. There ARE exceptions, but those are few and proven over a decade or more. I'm over chasing replacements or repairs with naught but excuses as collateral. feh. Go to AZ and borrow THEIR cheezy cow-tools.

HARRUMPH! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif

For the record, I agree on the tool bit. My better tools (the few that I have!) are squirreled away, and I only pull them out when I'm alone. Kinda like Frenchy in The Red Car with his tools with the Ettore Bugatti monogram.

Re: I'll never let anyone drive my car again......

There have been times when some friend or other has brought their car here to fix, I back off and watch... If they drop one of my wrenches onna concrete or disrespect 'em any other way, they're asked ONCE politely not to mar 'em like that. Next infraction gets a suggestion that they may need a flatbed soon... just remembered an appointment and the tools are about to be locked up. And I'm NOT joking. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif

In a similar vein after some neighbor came around and had no respect:

Re: I'll never let anyone drive my car again......

Did the neighbor get the point? I bet he didn't even read it.... people/family can be so inconsiderate.

oh, i wont go there.. I just had house guests from heck, they FINALLY left!!!! YAY!!! thankfully no cars(my babies) were harmed.... tense moments though!

Some time back, I loaned my American Made (remember those days?) 3000lb floor jack to a "friend" to change tires on his boat trailer. He neglected to tell me that his boat/trailer combo was over 8000lbs. The jack came back totally torqued (bent!) and unrepairable. And he claims that was the way he got it.

Re: I'll never let anyone drive my car again......

My college room mate lent his TR6 to an inlaw/outlaw who proceded to blow up the engine. The inlaw yelled at him for lending him a substandard car that ruined his trip...nice guy.
Hey Earl! You like them peas?

Maybe we all need one of these.

If I had that bumper sticker, every Coffee-Can muffled Honda would be riding up my bumper.

His parting words were. "well, you have insurance, right, because I don't".
Doesn't matter if he had insurance or not. Insurance Co. insure the vehicle not the driver. Paul's would have paid anyway. Ask ME how I know this.

Interesting read the post. I wonder what would happen when 2 like people get together with 2 unlike cars?

Re: I'll never let anyone drive my car again......

True Don, but he should have offered some help. I truly think that he was embarrassed by the fact that he lost it and wasn't the driver that he thought he was. It cost me just under a $1,000 to fix the car.

I chalked it up to bad judgment on my part. First, of his driving skills and second, of his worth as a friend. I would have never wanted to be in a fox hole with him after that gig.

Re: I'll never let anyone drive my car again......

I totally agree. I talked a friend into letting me ride his month old motorcycle around the parking lot. Took me 2 hours to talk him into it and promised him I wouldn't wreck it. Cost me $800.00.

Are you SURE it was a "thermometer"? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/banana.gif

Not sure I should weigh in on this, since according to Glenn, I don't even drive mine! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif

However, I'm on the side of sharing the drive, especially if it will get others excited about our babies. I know if the roles were reversed, I'd appreciate the offer of driving. Of course, though, I hope I'd be responsible enough not to trash it.

GREAT Mickey!! Can I Autocross it at VTR 2008??? Lets swap for the 'cross! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/driving.gif

Re: I'll never let anyone drive my car again......

Thank heavens the inlaws didn't read this thread. I have their Excursion parked outside because I'm too cheap to put a hitch on the LR...

Re: I'll never let anyone drive my car again......

My cars, my tools, my whatever are available for my kids to use as I would use them. I get as much or more enjoyment from their pleasure as when I use them. If something gets bent or broken, it can be fixed.

I'm also not a "Look but don't touch" guy. Anyone that wants to sit in one of my cars, wiggle the steering wheel, go "vroom vroom" is welcome. I'll even take their picture if they want. My grandson still talks about the kind gentleman that invited him to stand on the running board of his Blower Bentley and honk the horn (at the Portland ABFM).

They're only cars.

Re: I'll never let anyone drive my car again......

Right, they are only cars, but it's still MY car and MY tools, so I still get to make the rules.

MAN! I haven't autocrossed since '71 or '72! I may have to take you up on that... If not that, then maybe the Funkhana.
