I'll never let anyone drive my car again.......

Re: I'll never let anyone drive my car again......

My husband, my son and I have all spent equal time under my car...but I'm just about the only one to drive it cause I'm the only one who can start it. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/driving.gif /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Re: I'll never let anyone drive my car again......

Might be time to drag this old video out. Cobra crash

Re: I'll never let anyone drive my car again......

Well, they really can be a handful. Luckily it wasn't a real cobra but a fiberglass model. Still a shame.

Re: I'll never let anyone drive my car again......

Nobody but me drives my babies... and I never take up someones offer to drive theirs unless they ride with me. I couldn't refuse to drive a Ferrari Dino GT4!!!

Good heavens, what a bunch of BS! Its ONLY a CAR! What's that among friends? I'll let anybody drive my TR6 that wants, if I think they can handle the pretty tricky manual shift. When I was a teenager, I destroyed the transmission of my brother's V6 Capri (a hot car in those deplorable late-seventy days). He was most gracious and understanding. What a guy! I have always reciprocated and let others try any cool cars I have owned. I want to spread that LBC goodness around.

Don

I gotta agree with Don, 1000%.

Gee wiz guys, do you go and tuck your precious in and give it a kiss on the grill goodnight!?!

These cars are meant to be driven, frequently, and experienced by many.

Would you rather watch your kids and grandkids enjoy them now, or squabble over them after we are all dead and buried?! So if they break something, they get greasy with you fixing it, and maybe they will learn something with their father / grandfather. There are too darn many kids around these days who don't know which end of screwdriver to use.

Heck, I let Blake Discher autocross do like 4 runs on top of my 4 runs in my Stag even though I still had an over 800 mile drive back home!

How the heck are we ever going to pass this hobby to younger folks unless we let them experience our cars!! (not that Blake is a youngster by any stretch!)

Share the enjoyment and knowledge with anyone who shows some enthusiasm. Make a New Years resolution to pass on the hobby by sharing some of your knowledge with a younger enthusiast.

Oh, BTW
Happy New Year!!

Re: I'll never let anyone drive my car again......

Not sure I should weigh in on this, since according to Glenn, I don't even drive mine! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif

However, I'm on the side of sharing the drive, especially if it will get others excited about our babies. I know if the roles were reversed, I'd appreciate the offer of driving. Of course, though, I hope I'd be responsible enough not to trash it.

Actually......yes.

Re: I'll never let anyone drive my car again......

...I don't actually kiss them on the grills, but I do have a habbit of looking into the garage before I go to bed. I don't loan my TRs out (any more), but I have allowed almost anyone to drive my TR6 that expressed an interest. I have to know who they are and that they will respect it as much as I do. I rarely accept offers to drive other cars, but I have. -Most recently I drove a TR3 on a closed track and it really made my day/week/month/year. If it means that much to someone else, I'd like to share it.

One of the reasons I like TRs, is my brother let me drive his TR4 before I was old enough to be a driver.

I think the enjoyment should be passed around, but knowing that you're taking a risk that the car may not return the same as it left.

Re: I'll never let anyone drive my car again......

I still have memories of a good friend putting my 1966 tri power 442 into a ditch after he "assured" me that he could handle it. I paid for the damage and he never offered to help or kick in a dime. His parting words were. "well, you have insurance, right, because I don't".

I don't care who it is, they ain't getting behind the wheel of my TR6 unless I'm 200% comfortable with it. Can anyone make me feel bad about that? Absolutely NOT.

I'm not trying to make anyone feel bad about what is truely a personal decision. I make it each time someone asks, and never feel bad about the answer. (And it has been NO more than once.) But I do feel pretty good when someone comes back with a huge grin. I suppose someday I'll have to deal with a bad decision, and will start saying "never again".

These are "just cars", but most can not be replaced.

Re: I'll never let anyone drive my car again......

Living in a place where people come to visit in the winter months I have had the opportunity to get enthusiasts on the road cruising thru the desert in one of my TRs.

Sure I think about who they are and if they are reliable... but I know how much I would enjoy driving a TR on twisty roads in a very different landscape. My 'guest drivers' have come from as far away as the UK and Israel and, I think, taken home some good memories of the drive.

Re: I'll never let anyone drive my car again......

I hope that no one here ever has a bad experience with a situation like this. Are they just cars? Yes. Can they be replaced? Maybe, but more than likely not, in my case and that's purely a personal opinion based on being an original owner.

I'm sure that your intentions are good and be very careful about letting those keys go, unless you really don't care about what could happen.

In another 10 years or so, my nephews and grandsons will be of age to drive. Maybe by then I won't care.

Re: I'll never let anyone drive my car again......

I'm not trying to make anyone feel bad about anything ... but many years ago my sister came to visit and within the space of 2 days killed every one of my 3 running cars !

Nothing deliberate and no collisions, mostly just bad luck and a bunch of old junk cars. But after I specifically warned her to NOT try to use the high beams on the TR3A (they had an intermittant short I hadn't been able to find yet) and she stepped on the dimmer switch getting into the car (to drive 1/2 mile to the grocery store); I swore "never again".

But then there were certain exceptions ... and if the friend who loaned me his TR3A at VTR/SP a few years back ever asks, I'll just hand him the keys !

Randall,

I don't think that anyone is. We all have opinions about our personal belongings and they are just that. In any case, what some one else says never really bothers me, because if it did, I'd never sleep!! I was a Service Manager for 15 years!!

Now to really stir it up and get near and dear to everyones hearts, how about this?

What are your thoughts about lending out tools?

This ought to really get interesting, especially as the current and former technicians weigh in.

Having lost a bunch of tools to loans over the years, I can safely say that one would probably have a better chance of getting the keys to my TR6 than getting the keys to my roll-away.

I'll pretty much loan tools to anyone I know personally; that I think is capable of handling them, and has a reasonable chance of returning them in good condition.

But then, I don't need them to make a living; and I don't have professional grade tools. I'd feel a lot different if I might miss a lucrative job because someone walked off with a $200 Starrett mike. But when I only paid $50 for the set at Enco and I'm not likely to need them this month, it doesn't seem worth worrying about.

This thread is an entertaining read. It reminds me of this Ferrari:

Re: I'll never let anyone drive my car again......

Interestingly, my insurance company for my TR6 (American Collectors) won't cover any driver for my car with less than 10 years driving experience (licensed).
