IE-10 in W-8 problem [about blank]

Only problem now is, you can't buy a new Windows machine, off the shelf, without it! I never tried to buy a machine with a blank formatted HD in it, so you could program it yourself. Do they sell such a thing? PJ

Well ... actually the new computers (etc.) are so inexpensive, just forget what OS is on it. Just install whatever OS you want. I think the only limitation would be copy-protected systems where you've paid for one installation and used it, so you can't install it on another computer.

In a way, it's like buying a car. If the average new car buyer were asked "so what engine and fuel system and transmission and axle ratio and compression and ... do you want in that car?" - they'd probably be so overwhelmed they'd go somewhere else.

Do hand-held devices let you choose which OS you want?

I've used Linux Fedora for many years, on laptops and desktops. It's free for download. Still a Neanderthal - no hand helds.

Most (if not all) device manufacturers load an O/S, most with M$. For a while, Dell was said to be willing to sell a "naked" laptop but I never saw one or got confirmation. The "excuse" is/was that if you tossed some off-the-grid O/S into one, the manufacturer wouldn't be able to honor the warranty. Total BS but it made for a good enough backup story to continue the Microsoft Tax scheme.

I use a local parts supplier but an outfit like Tiger Direct sells components so it is not too difficult to put a desktop together and NOT pay Microsoft their tithing. Laptops and other portables are a completely different kettle o' fish.

So, what were saying is, I could just buy another HD for this machine, keep this HD loaded as is, it has all the Toshiba drivers on it to copy, especially the wireless drivers and load what ever I want on the new drive. Food for thought. Split he partitions and run two systems of my choice. My desktop has two 300 gig HDs, one has W-7 the other drive has Fedora. Since moving to Oklahoma, I haven't set it up yet. Someday. PJ

Just keep in mind - drivers for one OS probably won't work with a different OS.

Are we having fun yet?

T.
