My take on Handicapped plate parking it should only be for someone that has a hard time moving. This is on their own or with help form others. I see to many times someone clearly does not need this parking space walking normally to or from their car.

Take a look at the requirements in one state that posted earlier on this thread.

NOT ALL HANDICAPS ARE VISIBLE.

I agree with not all handicaps are visible. But there are to many that use handicaps as an excuse.

My wife has a rare form of muscular dystrophy. Any overuse of a major muscle group, especially the legs, can cause severe damage to them, resulting in rhabomyolsis and kidney failure. She's careful, but landed in the hospital twice for it in tha past few years. She has a handicap permit since if she's "having one of those days" she can make it to the store or work and hopefully noe end up in the hospital. So yes, she has one, but from all outward appearances shouldn't need one.

Re: I Saw a "Handiccaped Plate" today....

A good friend of mine broke her hip while in the US Army. Because of that she has trouble walking long distances. While attending university, she used the placard that was issued to her by the VA. She drove a Miata and the student employed ticket writers decided that anyone who drove a Miata could not be handicapped and therefore was parking illegally. Each time she got a ticket she took it to the campus police department and they waived it. Then someone at the police department got uppity and backed up the , student ticket writers. She had to ask the VA to send verification that they had issued the placard. Then the campus police department told her that she needed a specific campus handicap placard. This was a state univeristy, the handicap placard was issued by the same state, the campus police personel seemed to just be looking for a way to increase revenue since she would have had to pay for the university placard and they were only temporary and needed renewal every semester. With all new applications and doctor approval each time. One of the office workers in the campus police department stated to her that if she drove a normal car and not a sports car then all this mess probably would not have happened.

After that, she had enough and went to the legal department at the VA who in turn wrote a letter to the campus police department. Soon after, she recieved a call from the campus police chief who told her that if she recieved anymore tickets for parking in a handicap area with her stat issued placard, no matter what car she was driving, that she was to bring the tickets directly to him. Six months went by with no tickets, then she got another with the Miata. Went directly to the chief and never got another ticket again.

None of the ticket writers had ever seen her, never knew a thing about her, only decided that a handicapped person should not be driving a Miata. We are all sports car fans, if you couldn't use your sports car, even if you were able, how would you feel?

Good one.

I have issues that occasionally cause me to walk with crutches or stay off my feet for a couple of weeks at a time and I could probably get parking tags for my Miata. I can usually drive fine, but even walking into the grocery store can be agonizing.

The key there is that I drive a Miata. Anybody ignorant enough to pass judgement on what condition I'm in based on the fact that I'm able to climb into a Miata is a fool - as were the people issuing the tickets in your story. I'm glad it ended well

Re: I Saw a "Handiccaped Plate" today....

Why is this getting so "off topic?"
My intent was "why would someone with a-
real disability be driving a 3 ft+lifited
truck?
I've been attacked by people who could
legally park in these spots, when I tried to
defend them.
IT comes down to - Are you Legal to park
in a "Handicapped" space?
I was just making an obsorvation that a
jacked up+ Pickup,with a hanicapped plate,just
seemed a little ot of place.
Why would you ever want to be in 4WD truck,
with a 6'+ kit,if you are legit?

Re: I Saw a "Handiccaped Plate" today....

I think that this thread has stayed on topic. The recurring moral being "Don't judge a book by its cover." Now that you say it was a 6 foot lift kit, yeah that is strange, but someone with a temporary handicap made not be financially able to get a new vehicle while they heal.

What kind of disability? To me it seems a little unusual too, but until I know the facts I can't make a qualified assessment on this particular situation. If I did I'd be no better than the idiot ticket-writers assuming anyone that drives a Miata must not need handicapped plates.
