I Saw a "Handiccaped Plate" today....

....on a jacked up 4WD pickup.
Does this just seem a little weird to anyone
but me?

True story from up here... I spotted this van in an older neighbourhood

A few weeks later while browsing the site of a local musician I met (who happens to be confined to a wheelchair) it turned out to be his van! Not quite sure how he gets in and out of the van... :cooler:

Re: I Saw a "Handiccaped Plate" today....

My dad had a formula firebird (somewhere around 325 HP), then had a stroke. Lost the use of his right arm, so the car doesn't tell the whole story.

Re: I Saw a "Handiccaped Plate" today....

Doug, not all handicaps are due to the fact that a person is paraplegic, etc.

There are many hidden handicaps that limit a person's physical movement...heart conditions, circulatory conditions, etc. Not all handicaps involve a wheelchair.

Re: I Saw a "Handiccaped Plate" today....

Just because you are physically challenged, doesn't mean you can't safely operate a vehicle.

First, not all handicaps are physical in nature.

Second, not all handicap cards are issued to the driver of the vehicle. They are issued to the handicapped person..who may transfer the placard from vehicle to vehicle as a driver OR as a passenger.

My son has cerebral palsy and will NEVER be able to drive a motor vehicle. He has been issued a handicap card...which we use when he is in the car with us and we are going someplace that mandates his transfer from the car to his wheelchair.

Re: I Saw a "Handiccaped Plate" today....

Thanks Rick. I think we can often "jump to conclusions" about signs and labels.

Here in Connecticut, a "handicapped/disabled" plate or hanging tag can be issued to a driver *or passenger* as follows:

- Respiratory ailment that requires the use of portable oxygen
- Legal blindness (can be certified by an optometrist)
- Limited or no use of one or both legs
- Inability to walk 200 feet without stopping
- A neuromuscular function that severely limits mobility
- A Class III or IV cardiac condition (under American Heart Association standards)
- Severe limitations on your ability to walk due to an arthritic, neurological, or orthopedic condition
- Lung disease severely affecting ability to breathe

Re: I Saw a "Handiccaped Plate" today....

I had a temporary handicap card issued to me for the 12 months post total hip replacement.

I was using a walker or a cane for most of that period.

It was a Godsend, especially in the winter.

Re: I Saw a "Handiccaped Plate" today....

We had a guy at work who had a handicapped card for his Ducatti Desmo (huge motorbike!). He had no obvious physical problems and was a good guy so we always told him that it was obvious that he had a "mental handicap"! (I think that he had a heart condition).

Re: I Saw a "Handiccaped Plate" today....

That's not what I was getting at - I was referring to
how someone with a disability could climb up 3+ feet to get
into a pickup.
I'd have a hard time with no disability!

Jumping to conclusions about disabilities seems to be a common problem. My father doesn't "look" disabled but I wouldn't wish 1/100 of his medical history on my worst enemy... That little tiny gesture of his being able to park in a handicap space, is the least society can do to help out.

I for one did get that Doug, kind of like Braille on the elevators in parking garages - no disrespect is ever intended but it still makes you wonder/laugh.

Re: I Saw a "Handiccaped Plate" today....

Someone who has poor eyesight and wears glasses is "disabled" without them...
When you get to be old and have difficulty walking or even dialing a phone are you disabled?
There are to many stigmas associated with the word "disabled". I like to use "challenged" instead.

Re: I Saw a "Handiccaped Plate" today....

My take on Handicapped plate parking it should only be for someone that has a hard time moving. This is on their own or with help form others. I see to many times someone clearly does not need this parking space walking normally to or from their car.

Take a look at the requirements in one state that posted earlier on this thread.

NOT ALL HANDICAPS ARE VISIBLE.
