I need a Blister!

Well even though the Downton intake manifold was made for the Bugeye Sprite, it sits to high for the Monza bonnet. Not a surprise really as I have found a few pics of the Monza with a Bonnet Blister. So do I cut my bonnet or go with the stock intake manifold? Remember the Downton manifold was supposed to add more torque to the 948 and it elevates the fuel bowls and reduce the chances of vapor lock with my header. Plus they look cool :encouragement: Which way would you go? One bad cut and it is back to the paint booth! Any ideas about a premade blister? The ones I have found on the net seem to be a little large (18" long).

Thanks for your input

Were it me I admit that I'd not be cutting the bonnet... would be too worried that I'd bodge the cut, or that the end result would look out of proportion somehow.

That said, it's your car, build it the way you want it.

It could also be used as a " buck" to make a glass blister. They are $39 made here in California. But i first have to make a cut in the bonnet to see how much the SU 's rise above the hood. Just not sure, the period cool factor is hard to give up, but this might be beyond my skill set. Wondering about a side draft 40 Weber? The SU 's seem to be working well though!

To me, the risk vs reward doesn't work out now that the car is painted. I don't see any intake manifold adding enough torque to notice on a 948. Put a Judson or a Shorrock on it if you want period cool and the most torque you'll get out of a 948. My .02 deposited.

Exactly what I was thinking, I can't see three or four ounces of torque making a difference. I wouldn't cut it and would wrap the header is heat became a problem. You could also form up a cold air box/intake to bring cooler air to the carbs and you'll get your "cool" factor back. Pun not intended but it works.

Never thought in a million years I'd ever see a BE or Don Healey say that...

If you’re running the 948 engine you can go with a 40DCOE, the manifold and carburetor is horizontal. If your running a 1275 and up you can run the 45DCOE. I like the looks of the Monza bonnet!! I would guess that the cost of the Weber will be less than the cost of the paint and fitting of blister?

I can't imagine that the Downton Manifold will give any performance increase worth cutting a hole in your bonnet.
Revert to standard, I think.

Guys I am on the road ( Fresno, doing some Veterinary ET). I have some pics of some monza bonnets with blisters. I can do all the body work and I still have lots of Single stage poly to do touch ups. I will refer you to https://mk1-performance-conversions.co.uk/buying_downton.htm for some more info on the manifold. The head on my 948 has been uprated a bit. A blister was a feature on the very first Monza bonnet used by John Sprinzel in the Liege Rome Liege rally in 1959. When I get back home I will post some pics. I do appreciate all your comments. These manifolds do make a premium on ebay in the UK, though I have promised it to member if I do not use it and will pass it on as it was passed to me by BillM.
