Have to replace sons car he smashed last spring...
No fun for the old guy

I made mine replace the Spitfire himself after he wrecked it. It took him a few months but now he has a half way decent 98 Dodge 1500 p/u that he found for $1000.

As much as I like cars, I'm with you that I'm not a fan of the buying process. I like having cars (obviously, given my history) but the process, especially with late model cars, is just a pain. Good luck.

Ditto to all this. I detest the process... the game... the battle.
With my wife's last car, we used the COSTCO (bottom-line) pricing system with dealers, and even then there was room to negotiate. I guess that's the issue - that one wants that best price and the haggle seems unavoidable for such a costly item.
About all that is positive is that as one ages, one gets fully jaded by car sales people and it's easier to just walk away.

It seems all the cars that fit our price, mileage, and type, are 200 miles away
Long way to go ...kind of forces your hand

Last few regular cars I've bought have been thru carmax.
(though I don't think they have the $1000. -$2000. range)
no haggle,,,,take it or leave it; warranty available; got a week to return it.
and you can shop the whole country, if you don't mind paying the shipping.

I used AutoTrader to locate a car that was a 2 hour drive (Portland to Tacoma). It is awkward to expect to "deal" that way... though I did feel out the dealer ahead of time, and was prepared to drive home. It worked out.

My kids will often ask me to go shopping with them. Their true motive is for me to play "bad cop."

I have scoped out all the usual sites and have cars.com on my computer and phone with automatic updates pinged on cars that I am searching on
Bought the Ody through them in Charlotte and found the Z4 through them in NJ.
three cars in about a year and a half is getting old

Carmax would be my choice unless I had already decided on a particular model. When I bought my Lexus SC430 Pebble Beach edition,I already knew exactly what I wanted and the price I was willing to pay. I also knew I wanted a 5 year bumper to bumper warranty even though it would be a used vehicle. Went to the local Lexus dealer and 4 years later am more than pleased. Service is a pleasure and they treat me like royalty. Also get free deluxe washes for as long as I have it. Also get great coffee and sweets. Tee,hee. So Carmax unless you know what you want. Phew, wordy I was.

Carmax didn't have what we are looking for in a 250 mile rad

I can get you a good deal on one of these.
No power steering.

But you can probably drink and drive in that thing.

I leased my last 2 cars. Much simpler. You can usually get a better car by leasing and if the buyout price is right, you can buy it at the end of the lease or walk away. My '02 Accord had a buyout price of $13K but the retail price was over $14K so I bought even though they wanted me to extend the lease. That was back in '05. We still have the car and it runs great with 142K on the clock. maybe time to change the plugs?

Guy, most of the cars seem to be in the Greenville area which is about 211 miles
Others in the Jacksonville, parts of NC equally as far
9-11K
45K or less miles
4cyl autobox
Focus, Sentra, Forte, Elantra, Civic
