I hate buying cars

Yo Ben... Know you're a Vdub expert. Looking at a 13 Jetta S with
2.0L I4 8V MPFI SOHC 31K
Don't know squat about VD's
Any help from anyone

The 2.0 in the Jetta is a decent unit, but a wee bit low on power (not a bad thing for a youngster). VWs are stoutly built, and will keep you safe, no question. I know people who have had about 200,000 miles out of one of those engines, with proper maintenance they should be reliable. I'm sure that Ben could add more from the technician's point of view.

You can expect pricing to be in the region of around $15k or so for a Certified Pre-Owned 2013 model year Jetta SE with about 30k from a dealer, a couple of grand or so less for the Jetta S. Make sure that the car has had the voluntary recall performed for the steering wheel clock spring, without which the dealer should not be able to deliver a car.

Privately you'll pay a little less but won't have the peace of mind of the factory extended warranty, and you will need to take the car in for that recall yourself.

CarMax are no-negotiating (as are many other dealers, ours included) but they are always more expensive, which is why you will never see CarMax on Cars.com or Autotrader...

"Have to replace sons car he smashed last spring..."

Shouldn't your son be the one who's replacing the car?

His job is to get straight A's in college and get his commission to the Army.
Don't fully blame him for the accident

if he can accomplish that, then the replacement car is a very nice graduation present.

Here's a letter he got last spring

Well done, Mr. Dad and Mrs. Mom!:banana:

Being a parent isn't easy. But if the worst you ever have to do is finding a replacement car for your son that is pulling a 4.0 to get an Army commission, you should consider yourself a lucky man indeed. Pay no attention to those who say he should be paying for this himself. Sounds like he's a good kid holding up his end.

Nicely Done! congrats to young Colin! We are lucky to have young people like him aspiring for a military career.

BTW: all three of my kids went to USC (youngest is a Jr. this year).
funny thing is, they were all dead set on going out of state, but after a lot of travel miles and research, stuck with the USC.
which of course was to our(M&D) good fortune!

Guy, Colin's a Jr. too, though the basic training set him back a semester.
He starts his Jr year in Jan
Were does he live?

I think 5 yrs (&/or summer school) has about become the norm for getting a bachelors these days.
my other two had go extra semesters just to get in the classes they need.
#3 is majoring in changing majors.

BTW: Her boyfriend wanted a navy career,(USC Chem.E) but couldn't pass the physical because of a deviated septum, of all things.

Service is a lot more particular this generation, than in my day.

Funny how qualifications change with time. At one time in the distant past, to get into the Navy you had to have a perfect set of teeth with none missing, aside from other physical qualifications. Education wasn't even on the list, go figure. PJ

My dad was the first member of our family to not serve in the Navy or Marines since the Civil War due to the fact he had broken his back when he was sixteen. They told him to go try to the Army because they weren't too particular at the time (late 60s early 70s) he declined because he said he'd never be able to go home.

Your dad was 18-20 in the late 60's early 70's???

yep, in those days they would've found him a nice hooch in SE. Asia to call home for a year or two.
