TR4/4A I did it again...

Well, I bought another TR4a...the one advertised on CL and posted on another forum. It was advertised as a 64, but that can't be right and it looks just like my 67. The commission plate is missing and I'm not sure how to go about getting a Heritage certificate without one. I just got the bonnet open and haven't even looked to see if it's got an OD. Can anyone tell from the pictures what year TR4a I bought?
Thanks, Rut

The side indicator lights would suggest it's a TR4A (65-67) but the hood ornament is pre-65. Another Triumph mystery!

Those SU's (with their linkage and fuel lines) look as if they always have been there...and if so, that points to the '67 model year.

Thanks guys! Are there any other locations of numbers I could use to order a Heritage certificate? I would like to take the car back to original if possible.

Marv,
Thanks, it looks like CT67105E and it's still pretty gunked up after cleaning.

66 or 67 if the SU's are original (not exactly sure when they switched but both of my 66's came with SU's). If the engine is original, I'd say early 66 comparing it to my earlier one which was built in May 1966 - maybe January or February.

1966 Triumph TR4A

  • Body: 68668CT
  • Engine: CT69238E

Built: May 9, 1966

I think you can get them to generate a Heritage certificate based on the engine number. What does the title have on it?

Scott,
Thanks for the info and I'll check on a Heritage certificate using the engine number. There's no title on the car, bill if sale only...that's all that's required here in Alabama. I have several LBCs with titles from other states and Alabama won't issue a title based on those or use them for registration. Once registered in Alabama it's pretty easy to sell the car to a title state using that information.

As I recall BMIHT will (for an additional fee) search and issue a certificate working with engine number or body number.

I emailed them to find out what I need to do using the info I have.
Thanks, Rut

No title and no commission plate? You may not want to know the history...

Once it's researched and registered in Alabama it should be safe according to DOT/revenue department. The Heritage certificate will possibly tell me what I need to know regarding commission number and the state will make sure it's clean.

Started stripping down the car and removed the bonnet, boot lid, front and rear wings, doors, grill assembly, radiator, dash support, and a few other items. I'm pleasantly surprised at the lack of rust on the fasteners and the good condition of the interior of the body panels with only a small amount of rust on the drivers side front wing. The frame is in terrible shape and I may be in the market for a good used IRS frame depending on what I decide to do, restore or part out. There is some previous rust repair using fiberglass and that's separating from the metal as expected. Heard back from BMH and I can get a certificate using the engine number if I supply pictures of the car and engine clearly showing the number.

Posting a few pictures of what I've found so far...match to my surprise the engine turns freely and the spark plugs from way back look...ok?

****, that body looks pretty clean, especially for a cheap buy. You say the frame is pretty much toast, so I guess that shows how the body is not always a good indicator of the frame.

Do you have any pictures of the front upper and lower valances where they meet the fenders? Looking for some original pictures...and some original panels (if anyone knows anyone with some that are in good condition). Thanks!

Gary,
Will these work?
