Cleaned my engine back plate with media blaster to remove surface rust. I want to mount it on the assembled block and paint it but I don't want flash rust so I coated it with light oil. Is there a standard method to dealing with the problem of flash rust after cleanup?

After you degrease the back plate you can spray it with a phosphoric acid based metal preservative like Ospho. Rustoleum makes one that I buy at the big box stores that you can dilute with water, spray it on and let it dry...does a very good job.

If you're going to paint it, you really don't want to put oil or such things on it. You can give it a coat of primer and paint it at your leisure. If it's something you plan to weld, you can use weld-through primer.

I'm currently restoring my engine, and I'm painting parts as I go. I use media blasting only as a last resort, as it creates quite a mess and can leave abrasive where you really don't want it. For flat items, a wire wheel on an angle grinder is great.
