How smart is the Smart Car?

Somewhere in Jefferson Parish, LA.

OUCH!

Too bad it's a Ford Escape and not a Smart Car

The accident was in Harvey, LA (you can see the ambulance in the background).

The vehicle's wheel under the front of the red truck is a good giveaway, it's a stock Ford 5-lug wheel. The "smart" uses a 3-lug wheel.

Here's a close-up:

The Ford was hit slightly on the side and wasn't completely accordioned as it seems in the image. The driver survived the crash.

Not much could have survived those "bookends" :eeek: !!! Maybe an Abrams! I suppose the EMTs are there for mop-up duty!! :frown:

All is NOT what it appears to be (again!!)

There's some debate about it being a Ford - some think it's a Dodge, others a Chevy. The Ford Escape information was supposedly from the Sheriff's office.

Whether the "smart" is dangerous or not may be a matter of opinion. Regardless: I think they're butt ugly and stupid

Whoosh! Right you are! This photo unleashed a firestorm of comments on a Smart Car website. They were plenty ticked off too. A larger photo shows it beneath the Westbank Expressway in Harvey, LA. I drove that way yesterday. Good eye, or good Googling.

Hi Bill,

I remember when AMC Pacer owners were defensive about their cars too.

Very sorry to say but, they don't survive a crash very well.
If I have anything to do with it, no member of my family will ever get into one, let alone drive it!

All to save a few cents in gas?

A was googling around and came upon more picture of that crash (VW) - including the poor bastard who was in it. I wish I hadn't seen those pictures - will not post them here - not for the faint of heart.

I saw worse once, a VW Rabbit that was caught in a 55 mph semi-truck head-on collision (one jumped a guard rail). Both truck drivers were killed. The VW's engine block was compressed several inches. Some things are better off not seen.

This vehicle was some form of SUV (Escape, etc.). It's not a VW CrossFox. The taillight shape is wrong, and they're not even street legal in the U.S. Regardless there are some accidents, like this one, you're not going to survive no matter what.

The accident was in Brasil, and it is a CrossFox, you can clearly see the beginning of the name decal along the bottom of the car:

How'd they dig the driver out of that huge diesel engine?

Like I said in an earlier post, I found a site with more pictures of that crash, including the driver. He was in several pieces. It was not a pretty site and I won't post it here.

I concur. It was pretty nasty. I don't think it would matter what car was involved in either of these, it wouldn't be a pretty site.

I was referring to the first accident that TR6BILL posted, which I thought was being confused with the second. I should've been clearer. Sorry about that.
