How far we've come

I found this video of the speed of aircraft through history quite interesting.

I find how far computing power and memory/ storage has come equally fascinating. The computer that took us to the moon had a clock speed of just 1.024 MHz, 36K of RAM, and 2K of ROM. We have a billion times that on our smart phones.

Fun fact about the X-15: eight of the twelve pilots who flew it were awarded Astronaut wings. The five military pilots recieved their wings during the program. Because there were no commercial Astronaut wings before the 2004 flight of SpaceShip One, the three civilian NASA pilots were not awarded their wings until 2005.

The US recognized 50 miles to be the boundary of space in the 60s which is the boundary between the mesosphere and the thermosphere. Today, the FAI sets the boundary for space at 100 kilometers, which is 62 miles. The X-15 flew higher than this mark on two flights, one to 347,800 feet (106 kilometers) and one to 354,200 feet (108 kilometers).

I remember one of the pilots giving a speech at our grade school,
but don't remember a lot about it.

I once read that if flight had advanced as fast as micro electronics we would be able to circumvent the globe in an hour on a gallon of fuel.
That is how fast electronics is advancing, exponentially

On the other hand take my daughter, her best friend she goes to school with lives 15 miles away, not much chance of socialising
after school, but in the evenings they do there homework together, play games, practice singing and whatever else.
If there is something they did not understand in class they can search online and find answers,
so it does have its advantages,
But i do agree we never go anywhere without our phones in our pocket,

Nothing wrong with texting or such with folks not around you or when you know they can't respond right away. But I see so many at stores, restaurants, and such not talking but maybe a laugh or something as they text back and forth. Woman i dated I told her I wanted to see her face, her eyes and smile when we were together, not the top of her head as she worked the phone to tell me something when I'm 3ft away...

Bet you're no longer dating. :D

We'd known each other 20 years, work friends and got together after she divorced, mutual idea. First date, I pulled out the chair for her at a place, she looked at me like "what are you doing??", her ex had never done that before. Anyway, long story short she had to deal with a family covid thing with her elderly folks out of state from here, and disappeared. Stopped social media, phone would ring till messages, email stopped, everything. So I hope she decided to start over or something.

So, more than anyone wanted to know...
