Horsepower! been looking at stuff I shouldn't

We've all dreamed of more power and I'm not sure what the correct answer is and I've been thinking about this for a long time. I'll be starting up my motor next week and I'm getting really curious if all the time and effort will be worth it. Late this summer I'll put the bugeye on a dyno and see just what a motor built for a supercharger wil put out at the wheel.

Trevor, you have mentioned the 7 port head a couple times. Do you have a link you can share witht the rest of the class?

Glen, what turbo are you running in your car?

There's a couple of links up there somewhere.

Hi Morris,

I'm running an old Rayjay turbo on a custom manifold.
Glen's turbo

This setup has toasted a 1380/Weber with room to spare, and only a .020 overbore.

Just gotta buy more Lotto tickets and cross the fingers a bit harder. That motor BELONGS in my bugeye, hehehe!!!

That is a sweet setup, Glen!

What did that turbo come out of?

Rayjay turbos were used on a bunch of cars as an aftermarket part. I do not know if they were used on any production runs. I've seen them on Porsche , Triumphs, Morgans, Z-cars, etc.

I think Turbonetics still makes a turbo similar to Glens.

Rayjays were airplane turbos at the beginning ,

very well built , BAE turbo used them in the late 70s and made kits for many cars ,

If you get a modern turbo I believe it needs to be adapted to a different seal,

the modern ones are made to blow thru , the early ones are suck thru with the carb at the beginning of the intake stream,

Most of the VW guys use a sidedraft Weber DCOE,

Lots of power if set up right , but you do need to size the turbo to the motor size to minimize turbo lag....

Here's a better pic of the manifold. The PO welded it out of gas pipe. CR is 8.5:1, custom cam from APT, roller 1.5 rockers, ceramic coating on pistons, exhaust valves and turbo guts. LARGE rimflow valves, Gilmer timing belt, .020 over Venolia forged pistons. All balanced and hooked to a Datsun 5 sp with adaptor from Paul A. 2" exhaust that growls low enough to set off car alarms (really!).

Aarrgghh! I can't figure out how to get a photo inserted into this panel, and Comcast can't seem to add another to my website for linking. Not my day. sorry Send me you e-mail address and I'll send it to you.

A while ago there was a rumor of a Chevy 3 valve head that would bolt right up to the A-series block. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

What is a Chevy 3?

What I meant to say was a head from a Chevy V8 with 3 valves per cylinder.

Doesn't sound likely. Even half of a Chevy V8 is still a lot bigger than an A Series. I expect it would hang off both ends of the block a couple of inches.

Yeah, I would think that would be too long to work. I have seen the winston cup heads put on the 2300 ford block for racing in the Goodies dash series, but most v8 blocks are a lot longer than the A series head. Maybe a really small v8 like the 215 buick ,but thats the same as the Rover v8 and I'm sure thats been tried. I don't see how a chevy head would give any more power unless it was something special.

This Chevy head trick works

First you get a Chevy head, then another, then a Chevy block, then a Detroit Diesel (also GM) blower...etc. Tried and true horsepower.
