Hood latch warning

I could not find the original thread on this but
I thought it important to post this info.

The Macy emergency hood release DOES NOT OPEN
the Moss aftermarket hood latch. Field tested today.

I installed the Macy as a backup release to my other two
backup releases simply because I had it lying around. The
OEM hood release failed in a parking lot today. I pulled
the Macy to see what would happen. It slipped off the
shortened latch pin and fell apart.

I drove home before I tried my thru-firewall emergency hood
release. It worked perfectly. So, if you are installing a
Moss aftermarket hood latch be aware, the Macy might not work.

Dale,

Did you use the pre-drilled hole that was on the side of the latch frame? It looks to me as if the Macy bracket is not close enough to the stop bar. In other words, it's too far back (only a fraction of an inch) and that allows it to go past the latch itself to where you are now.

I tested mine several times on the bench and determined that I needed to drill another hole, forward of the original to make it work properly.

This isn't the best pic, but all that I have for now. The arm should be right up against the weld seam on the catch.

Nope, it is installed properly. The problem is the
Moss latch arm has been shortened as in my photo above.

I could grind a new Tinster arm that would probably work
but anyone ordering the Moss part needs to know the standard
Macy probably won't work.

The Moss part pictured appears to have the same size lever as the original latch on my TR4... perhaps the OEM part changed over the years.

Although the TR4 part does not have the saftey catch, Moss lists the same part number (802-230) for TR4, 250 & 6... so they may have just used a parts design from an earlier catch plate assembly.

PS: On TR4s (on my TR4 anyway) the assembly was painted body color.

I added a stop to mine for that very reason too.
I also had to make the loop smaller so it fit properly - I was tight on the height.

Hey Joe,

I can see in your photo, your latch arm is longer than
the one I got from Moss.

I used a file and removed some of the inside semi-circular
catch arm and also dry fitted a stop on the exterior.

With a stop in place, the semi-circular catch arm does open
enough to release the hood piece. Without the stop, the
Macy pulls thru before the semi-circular catch arm opens
enough to release the hood piece.

Maybe mine was defective with the shortened arm? In
any event, I tried many things to tweak it before I went
thru the firewall.

I just hope no one gets stuck with a shut hood.

Dale,
Think of how much money you could have saved if you never had opened that hood in the first place.
