High-Torque Starter

My BJ7 high torque starter was working then stopped. It makes a a noise like its hitting the flywheel but won't engage. Took it out and bench tested it, replaced solenoid and tested battery. Everything seems fine, but for some reason I hear the starter make sounds like its just hitting metal and not engaging. No spinning sounds either. Puzzled Mike

Did you try rotating the flywheel a bit by putting the car in gear and pushing it?

Same thing happened to my BJ7 so I bought another pre engaged starter and that did not solve the problem. Then I went back to the battery connections, cleaned them up and now the starter works great. I am now the proud possessor of two pre engaged starter motors along with the original one. Give it a try you never know.

I tried that and got the same results. I've loosened the bolts to see if there was a little different seating position, but didn't feel any change.
I've tried just to leave the bolts a little loose without success. I'm going to try shimming but not too sure which bolt or how much.

Is the jumper still connected to the internal solenoid?

You may have a short or dry joint in the electrics some where. The starter takes a big load and if there is a short then it will shudder. Turn your lights on then try the starter, if the lights dim the you have a problem in the power line

Check that Jumper Wire, and all connectors to the starter for corrosion. The jumper wire that included with the high torque starter I purchased was corroded and the copper wire was green. A fresh jumper was installed and the starter worked perfectly.

Just bridge the two 13mm nuts on the solenoid, if the starter does not spin up then its toasted,
the solenoid does two things it spins the starter and throws the the gear into the ring gear on the flywheel ,
if it just clunks with no spin then its only throwing out the gear not spinning the starter.

I had similar problem with high torque starter on my 1956 BN2. Mine would engage but made a loud squealing sound first. I pulled out the starter and found the bearing was loose so I replaced starter to fix. I found I had just a small amount of side play but that was enough to cause noise. This may not be your problem. Just a thought. If you decide to replace I would not recommend the one from Moss Motors. Good luck, Marty
