Hi group

And speaking of tri-carbs, GW, I have been reading about your flat slide to the dark side with interest, I have fooled with a number of these on HD's (honorable maker's original intent!) and Volvos, of all things, and can tell you that they work. In theory and just judging from pictures, lengthing the intake line via plenum and/or air horns should give a broader power curve, think Helmholtz, a bit of bottom end torque and a bit of top end HP.

Hi Dave,
The distance from the head to the outer circumference of the air cleaner is maxed out now on the front and rear carbs. I had to mill about a ¼” off the carb adaptors just to get everything in. Wound up using rubber air cleaners so they could flex a little. If I go to a smaller cleaner, I will starve the engine at higher RPMs. Once I take the car on the road and load the engine, I’ll know more. I may have to fabricate a common air filter that is wedge shaped (narrower at the bottom).

Hi GW, it looks like you would need around 60 sq.in. of filter area - unless your engine is bored and/or stroked to quite a bit over 3000ccs so 3 1"X 6" filters would have about 60 sq.in. so the main thing would be to fit them as close as possible to the carb body. Most rubber filters fit on flat slides with a screw clamp in back of the actual filter. How about fitting a filter back plate that was secured with a clamp inside the filter (goes around the carb intake in front, not in back of the plate) this could double as at least a 'stub' air horn and give you another inch or so to work with. you could wind up with a filter that extended around 2.4" from the 'lip' of the flat slide, not the intake and still have close to 2" usuable filter area each for a total of almost 100 sq.in.(33X3), way more than enough! e-mail me and I can send some pics of something I did for a Volvo that was similar.
R3K - I have a couple of BSAs, an OIF Thunderbolt 650 and A Victor Special 441 (unfinished) in British stuff, NSU's And Maicos in German bikes and a round case Ducati 750. I posted some photos in the bike section of the forum. And yes, I have a serious motorcycle Jones.
Cheers!
Dave G.
