They're doing again, just like they did in the 60s. The car will even be called the "GT-350H".

Why am I not surprised? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I wonder if they'll be cross referancing with the SCCA
race results?
In the old days, they didn't have computers like they do now.

Now, just figuring out which Ford dealers will get those 500 cars when they roll up 20,000 miles with Hertz & are returned for sale & getting on their list to buy one becomes the challenge!

Good marketing move by ford and hertz!

THAT's my conclusion.

Does shoe polish come off the windows ?

will they check tire wear when I return it ?
Anyone know the code to over ride the rev limiter ?

wonder what it will do in the 1/4 mile ?

"but Sir you only put 30 miles on it , what did you do to the tires "

"I raise ferrets! They got loose an' ATE them tires!"

Cool idea but as someone who rents vehicles all the time I the first thoughts that came to mind are; No coupons, No upgrades & Premium rates. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I have noticed a trend in rental cars of late where a lot of companies are offering lots of premium rides these days. Oh sure they still have those El cheap’o & pathetically bland offerings they always do. But I view these premium rentals as “leaders” to draw the irregular customers - not really meant for us everyday renters. .

I read this today on CNN also, very cool. A little background on the original; 1001 Shelby GT350's were sold to Hertz in 1966 (the only year of the original Hertz Shelby). Most cars were black with gold Le Mans stripes and gold rocker stripes, although a very few early cars were Wimbledon white with blue stripes (very rare for a Hertz car!). Most cars were automatics but again, there were a very few with 4 speeds. All cars had the 271hp K code Hi-Po 289, chromed Magnum 500 wheels, and the 9000rpm tach like the standard Shelby GT350 (but those cars got argent painted Magnum wheels, not chromed). My father and his cousin rented one of these cars one weekend when my father was on leave from the Navy and they had a great time tearing up the place in it. There is a beautifully restored GT350H at our local Friday night summer cruise in, I see him every year. An exceptionally nice car.

I'm all in for the new car. If I was traveling somewhere I'd spring for the extra cash to rent one, but then again I get all weird when it comes to cars with running ponys on the grill /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazyeyes.gif. I wonder what the rates are going to be like. You can bet they are gonna rent out quickly to.

So, what's it gonna cost -- eg for a day or a weekend? Would be neat for a fathers day/birthday present. Let's see, I could make up this fake Hertz/Ford mailer with one of the graphics software thingies and drop it in the mail to my house!

Well if some of my recent experiences with rentals is any indication, I’d say it’s a safe bet that they’d be about twice the price of a regular rental of similar size & capabilities.

On www.AVIS.com I priced a rental for my trip to San Antonio earlier this month. While I was on their website I saw that they had Hummers available - but these priced out at about $450 for a 4 day weekend, whereas their normal Chevy Trailblazer SUV (4x4) was priced at $230.

BTW Ended up going with the Trailblazer over some of the other offerings (Minivan's, Full size sedans etc) mainly because I needed the extra room (5 passengers) & the 4x4 capability because my kids live in the sticks.

I suspect the Shelby will be hard to keep on the lot at first even with the markup. An walking in without a reservation (assuming there are any on the lot) the price might be even higher. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Ya know its funny - the Shelby is cool & all, but I just did a search for a local rental car outfit here in San Diego called “Rent-a-Vette“. And for about $250/day I can rent a C5 convertible for a 1-2 day rental. 3-6 days & the price drops to about $200 a day.

Other cars available are listed on this web site: Ren-A-Vette

Heck rent a Mini-Cooper “S” for $129 - $149 or a Z4 Roadster $149 - $179.

Now thats cool! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Sure, there are plenty of other equally entertaining rides out there to rent. I'd rent a Vette convertible, that would be a lot of fun. I think the Shelby rental is mainly for people who are either really into Mustangs or just want to say they've driven a Shelby. With only 500 being built (for the Hertz program) who knows, in 30 or 40 years if they are bringing big bucks at Barrett Jackson you could tell you're kids that you got to drive one of those for a whole weekend.

Why is a Mini Cooper SO expensive? We're talking a what-
-$25,000 vehicle? Should be about $50/day.

Believe me I know of what you speak. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif The inter-workings of rental car industry has been a bewildering paradox for me for years. Even you’re plain Jane econoboxes rent for about $20 a day and then try’n hit you for another $10 bucks a day for insurance and another 10 to 15% for taxes depending on where your renting the vehicle from.

Oh & lets not forget their 200%+ mark-up for fuel should you return a car with less gas than it left the lot with when you picked it up. With current gas prices that’s like $6+/gal! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

they put a premium price on popular cars. Good pricing strategy IMHO.

Yup, up from their already pricey vanilla regular cars. But don’t get me wrong I do agree that it’s a smart idea. Especially smart considering how for years most folks who rent frequently like I do, almost always whine about having to pay so much for how pathetically boring most rental vehicles are.

I put to you the following – an all too common way to denounce, criticize and/or take a shot at a vehicle in most automotive publications is to refer to it as or equate it to a “Rental”.
