Few years ago, Jerri & I were in Denver...rented a 'sporty' Chevy & took it to the top of Pikes Peak (drove the you-know-what out of it)...when we got ready to turn it in, it was filthy...I apologized but the agent was calm...he knew where I'd been & said it was cleaner than some of the cars people had taken skiing!
 
Many of you probably have heard the story about Carroll Shelby trying to rent one of the original GT350Hs back in the day. He wasn't recognized and did not have proper ID, so the Hertz rep refused him!

There were several cases of the original cars being returned with newly-drilled, suspicious roll-bar holes in the frame (this is what Jeff was referring to).

Also, Brock Yates wrote a story about pulling the engine from one of these cars and using it in a race car (just for the weekend).

We have has several "rental-looking" cars enter our EMRA Time Trial (track-day) events...we don't encourage it, but it's hard to police.

An old friend of mine owns an original GT-350H and I have ridden in it several times. It has that "clicky-clicky" Detroit rear end. The car has been a cover car for several national magazine and I'm pretty sure the owner is still a SAAC officer.

Detroit Locker, do you know if that was original on your buddys car Nial or did he add it? The locker was optional for any Shelby in 66 along with the wood rim steering wheel and Koni shocks. On 65 Shelbys all those items were standard. My buddy had a Detroit Locker in his 67 fastback with 4.56 gears. With a custom 289 hipo it was a rocket off the line. Talk about throwing you back in the seat on takeoff, god forbid he let off the gas quickly at the top of first gear. I thought I was gonna break my belt and go through the windshield.
 
I'm spending 5 weeks in Hawaii this summer & have a new Mustang convertible reserved from Avis.....too bad this one won't be out by then!
 
Scott - don't know...they only confirmed that it was a Mustang convertible...guess I'll find out when I pick it up.
 
Most of the Mustang rentals I’ve seen have the V6. But don't let that sway you - I hear the V6 pretty peppy and is only about 5 ponies shy of what the previous Mustang GT V8 used to tout. So it should still be a pretty fun ride.
 
Yep, the new V6 is a nice little motor. The new car with the 4.0 V6 runs 210hp, but it does have 240ft/lbs of torque, which makes it seem a lot faster than it really is, especially from a dead stop. Just to compare, a 2001 GT with the 4.6 has 260hp, but a nice fat 302ft/lbs of torque. This translates to average 1/4 mile times of mid to low 14's for the 01 GT (driver dependant), and I've seen mid 15's for the new V6 cars, roughly a full second difference, maybe a little more. However, go back some more and the race gets much tighter. A 96 GT is only running 215hp (285 on the torque side) so that might turn into a real drivers race. No doubt though that the 6 cylinder cars have come a long way from what they used to be, and either way I doubt Tony is planning on any stoplight shootouts with the local ricers. It's still a fun car to drive. I saw a guy with a new V6 car the other day, it had the new pony style grill with the small round foglights and the chromed cross bar, just like a 66. He had the factory Halibrand style wheels and it was silver with black stripes, a really nice looking car.
 
The Mustang only runs around $100/day and its interesting to be able to say you rented one after they are all sold. I called Hertz a few weeks ago to plan a trip to LA, as I plan to rent the car. I'm trying to coordinate it with an SCCA event (likely autocross, no straight line for me)but the autocross tracks are a bit far from LA. We'll see...

Interestingly enough, I saw a GT350H this morning that was Wimbeldon White with Gold striping, and yes it was original. In actuality, GT350Hs were made in batches, and there were green and red cars, as well as the other colors. Black with gold was by far the most common.

I'm sure if one of us searched, we'd be able to find the actual color breakdown.
 
Wow I'd never even heard of white with gold stripes, must have looked striking. I checked my Mustang Red Book and, although admittedly it is not a Shelby specific publication, they make no mention of that combo or any other colors. My friend that had the GT500 has a huge book on Shelby specs and production figures, I'll drop him and email and see if that mentions anything. Must have been crazy back when those cars were being built. Shelbys operation was always very cottage like and fly by the seat of your pants. From what I've read they really cranked those cars out to get them to Hertz, so I'm sure they slapped on whatever they could get their hands on to complete the cars and get them out the door. When my friend had the GT500 it amazed me on how bad the fit and finish on the body panels was on those cars. On the outside everything looked OK for the most part, although panel alignment even when they were new was not great. But in places like inside the trunk you could easily see where they basically just took a sawzall and hacked out the taillight panel to get their pieces to fit. The fiberglass pieces covered all the rough work up.

Incidentally, my buddy and I looked on Hertz website and there is no mention there of the cars availability that I could find. We searched on the major airports around here and couldn't find one, how do you know which locations have one?
