Help with fender bead

Been reading through this thread today and wonder if there's any experience in removing the bead. I am going to have my paint refreshed, the paint shop suggested I remove the bead to save masking and improve the finish. Is it a practical proposition to slacken all the wing bolts to with draw the bead then refit it all after paint , I'm not prepared to totally remove the wings by the way .

Andy,

Yes it is, I have just done it for exactly the same reason. However it can be fiddly. Firstly are you able to reach all the bolts to slacken them? My car doesn't have any heating and cold air trunking. And secondly you have to be able to reach all of the clips in order to straighten them as they will be bent over the edges so the beading is held tightly.

Thanks Derek , I don't have any cold air trunking and the heating such as it is doesn't interfere. I recently spent hours cleaning under the wings and am confident in getting to the tabs . likewise the bolts which all appear reasonably accessible and uncorroded !!! ( I may wish to regret that observation going forward.. ).
Thanks
Andy

Well a little research before I asked the question would have partially answered my question. I had ordered and received the replacement beading from Moss several months ago but had never removed it from the shipping tube. I just assumed all the pieces were straight since how else could they be put them in a 3" diameter cardboard tube. I assumed they had to be bent when installing them.

Turns out British Recovery was correct. The rear beading is cleverly twisted so it can slide into the tube. When you remove it, it has what appears to be a curve that will perfectly match the rear of the fender. Not sure how they did it but I was able to remove all four pieces and them put them back into the tube waiting for the time to install. You still need to add the minor bend to the bead right behind the door opening, but that doesn't look to difficult.

So it looks like the installation won't be a difficult as I was expecting, but I'm glad I posted the question. I now have a better understanding of the best way to protect the new paint.
