Hello, Intro/New owner. Love this car!

Good day all, I wandered into the MG forum and was made aware by some nice folks there that I own a Spridget (fairly decent 78 Midget)and might do well in this forum.

I have a few questions about what might be gained by adding a header and different exhaust. The existing exhaust has a cat converter, muffler and resonator and not in the greatest shape. I currently have the stock zenith carb. As $ presents itsself I was thinking the twin SU carbs or a weber. Other than that I will not likely do to many mods (student budget). In the meantime I would love to get rid of this rattling restrictive (I think) air box inlet tip. Any ill effect to this? Thanks for any info, experience or comments.

Tony

Welcome Tony, should have your questions answered here, lot of 1500 owners.
Fun aint it?

Im hoping so. This is really a cool car. I might have to find a way to get that seat back another inch or two pretty soon but its to much of a fun car to be picky over weather it actually fits or not /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The decals along the side say "special" does this mean anything, anything at all?

Thanks!
Suns out! going for a drive!!!

Tony, a twin SU setup can be difficult to find in the States, as all the North American spec cars were fitted with the single ZS. I think there are some modifications required to the fender well area to fit the duals on a Midget.
I ran a single SU HS4 on my 1500 Spit race car, and it was good enough to support 140 HP.
Headers and a free flowing exhaust will noticeably help performance, and sound much better.

a single SU would be fine by me. If I can get anywhere on the other side of 100 ponies I would be happy. This car still has smog pump-fixins, I intend to remove and keep it. I may comb ebay for a single SU and see what I can find. Will I need the manifold also or will the Zenith manifold be sufficient?

Thanks!

Tony

Tony, on the Spit, I was forced by the rules to use an original manifold, and the HS4 bolted right on. You may have to be a bit creative with throttle linkage, though.

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif It means you have a sticker on the side that says special. (and you probably are) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif Seriously, that is pretty much what it means. The "special" package was the stickers/ rear luggage rack/ am/fm.

It's all about the marketing

BTW I have a '76 and am also getting rid of the pollution stuff

Looks like the link I added isn't working (auction must be closed). The Special Edition included an AM/FM radio, trim rings on the wheels, luggage rack, & special stripes. Hope this helps.

Excellent, I love stickers!!! I plan to paint the car in the distant future, hope I can get the decals again, it does look pretty cool.

Any idea on what size exhaust is ideal for this engine in nearly stock trim w/a single SU, header and flowmaster of appropriate size. I would like to let it breathe but not go so big that it compromises low end drivability.

Thanks, it seems that each time I drive it I come up w/more questions. I will be doing the exhaust right after I sort out the ride height/alignment issue.

Tony

Hey Jeff,

What all did you have to do to get 140hp? That is amazing!

Hmmm, I think not. Maybe will work up to 140 but think Jeff has a longer lasting engine than that.

I can smell the burnout and hear the tires. Weeeeee.

Talk to us Jeff. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif
