Headlight indicator - audible sound

Hello all,

Maybe I'm alone here, but have you gotten out of your Healey and have someone say to you, is that your car? Why yes it is!...insert big smile here. Did you know you left your headlights on?

Here's my solution. There is a headlight indicator kit made by Quality Kits. Their part number K3505. It's a simple 3 wire hook up. Ground, ignition and headlight toggle. How's your soldering skills? Requires assembly. Directions are straight forward and I had it done in a couple hours. Some cutting of the generic black box will be needed. Like an opening for the wires to come out. I also drilled some large holes in the top of the box, so the sound is louder.

Now when I get out of my sweet ride, The Healey, and I forget to flip the headlight toggle up, a sultry, sexy female voice says, excuse me handsome, would you please turn off your headlights. Well maybe it more like....beep beep beep.

Hey Roger,
What's the quarter, was that a rebate? I think that would only work on Neg ground conversions, it looks like it is in series between the voltage regulator and the headlight switch. Does the kit come as a blank circuit board? Sounds like a fun little project.

Hey Greg,

You may be right, as you usually are, about working on negative ground cars.

Yup, a blank circuit board.

You know me, I only take on fun projects. After all, the Healey is one big fun project

Cheers,
Roger

I've dabbled with a soldering iron on occasion. Not as much as my dad did. Remember Heathkit? Dad made a couple TVs from them. Empty circuit boards and bags of resistors, caps, and thick manuals.

What a monster! Did you look at the little headlight alarms that are less than the size of a common cube relay? I have one of those on the Jensen. It only has two small gage wires and is so light weight its on the fusebox lid with double back tape.
I have seen those alarms in Kragen and J.C.Whitney.

I looked in Kragen, Pet Boys, Autozone, all the local stores. No success.

Why don't you share with us, a link to what you speak off. If it's built or needs assembly. Information like that is helpful to the ones here who are interested.

Cheers,
Roger

J.C. Whitney part number ZX734756N for $10.99. I know I have also seen them in the local auto parts store in blister packs.

Here's a link to J.C.Whitney's item.

The description does not tell how to install it. If anyone has installed this unit, maybe they will chime in with which two wires attach to which wires in a Healey.

The unit I installed used three wires. Ignition, ground and toggle.

Thanks for offering the information Ken.

Cheers,
Roger

Hi Roger,
I followed your Whitney link and read the reviews on it. One person said that directions come with it. Two of the reviews mentioned it mounts in the fuse box. Here is an excerpt.
<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:]It is small and installs easily by connecting two wires to existing fuses in the fuse box. It came with all the necessary connectors to tap into both types of fuses. The instructions were straightforward and accurate and it took me about ten mionutes to install.[/QUOTE]

Apparently it atttaches to the "fuse box". Unfortunately, Austin-Healeys don't have much of a fuse box. Maybe Jensens do.

Hi Greg,

Yes, I too read that.
These are people with modern cars.

I'm just asking.
I personally don't recommend a product unless I have installed it or know of someone who has installed it in a Healey.
Can't beat a installation that take only "ten mionutes" LOL.

 I almost corrected the spelling. Then I thought, what the heck, it's a quote.

Interesting... looks like the software upgrade changed my 4 letter word to heck instead of @#$&!

If you are married, you already have one of these. The voice says... " Hey as...le ! You left the lights on again ! "

:jester:  :cowboy:

I bought one of these for my old motorhome. I could not get the wires to piggyback onto the fuse block. I got frustrated with it and never did get it installed. Sold the damm motorhome.
I think we coud cut off the connectors and wire it directly into an ignition, hot, and lights on. It would be easy if you can get to the back of your dash.

Yes roger, I can see an audible for headlights but my Healey doesn't have a toggle switch.

I would rather see an audible switch for the turn signals. If you've ever followed a convoy of AH you know of which I speak.
