Header & DGV swap underway

Well, the carport isn't done yet (as you can see from the picture) but I couldn't wait any longer, so I've started the disassembly for the DGV conversion.

The two manifolds and the hollowed-out cat have been removed. It had been running so hot that it had 'melted' the gasket away between the exhaust ports. The tops of the valves, as well, have quite a lot of deposits (presumably due to the out-of-tune ZS carb). The head has been done fairly recently tho, so I'll leave it all on and hope it cleans itself up in use. If not, next winter might hold a rebuild.

I *think* I have a new gasket somewhere... otherwise that might hold me up. My thought is;

1. Clean up as much as possible, without disassembling too far. The only other things I want to remove are the heater core and the battery, as it's never been done and the battery tray looks like it has some surface rust. And, of course, the heat pump. I still haven't figured out the charcoal canister and/or PCV system, and what should be staying / going. Suggestions welcome.

2. Install headers

3. Intall Cannon and DGV

4. Replace fuel pump, install 12-804 low-pressure fuel regulator to bring it down to the approx. 2 psi that DGVs like

5. Install electronic ignition and a bigger coil

6. Tune & go

Thoughts?

OH! And this...

What's the white, three-wire connector? It's just in front of the coil / MC in the engine bay. I can't figure out where it should be. Help?

-D

That looks like the plug for the dizzy.

That three plug connector went to a connector on the original Opus Croakus dizzy. Fortunately for you, most of that junk was probably torn out ages ago. I cut mine off, heat shrunk the wire ends individually then wrapped them all in the harness.

I have a couple of those gaskets lying around if you want me to drop one in the mail to you. Just PM me your address.

Excellent... Thanks Morris, I'll check and see if I have one.

Next question;

1: Should I just install a 'road tube'? Or try to rig some sort of PCV system? What have previous installers done for their DGV?

Pictures, details?

TIA,
Duncan

And finally (ha ha)... Lucas aftermarket distributor w. amplifier? Or stock dizzy with Crane / Fireball XR700 optics? I'm leaning toward the Crane, since it's new.

Best,
Duncan

as far as pcv, what i wanted to do but never did, on the canon there is a flat spot on the far side(away from the engine) under the carb. it should be drilled and tapped for a 90° elbow and then run (with a pcv valve) to the valve cover. I did try the road tube approach....all that did was put the oil it blew under the car...

mark

But, but, how else will you keep it from rusting?

By the way what kind of header are you going to use?

mark

Finding a spot to tap in on the manifold is no problem, as Mark mentions there is a flat spot made to do just that. So I'd run a line from there, with a one-way valve, to the valve cover? So that overpressure (presumably pushing past worn rings) can vent into the intake manifold?

So I'm eliminating the charcoal filter? Do I need to worry about that PVC line clogging with oil, and/or pushing oil vapour into the engine?

-Duncan

yea...what he said. that is not the same as the moss one. which buy the way dosnt fit that well at all. Let us know how that one fits.

mark

I got it on eBay, already ceramic-coated. There aren't any markings on it to suggest the manufacturer. I'll let you know how it fits when I install it this weekend.

-Duncan

Test-fitted the manifold this weekend. Seems to fit very well! Haven't tried to fit the intake mani over top, but everything looks good so far.

Re: Header & DGV swap underway

It's a Maniflow...

APT sells them:

https://www.aptfast.com click on APT parts > Triumph parts > Exhaust > EXL23.

There is no image under this above-mentioned link, for some reason, but fortunately the same item appears under APT Parts > A-Series parts > Exhaust > EXL23 and there you can see a picture.

Slight website error to find the item under A-series at all, and weirder still that the image is only under A-series, I will inform Dave.

Sorry, mea culpa, fixed it.
