MGB HEAD [MGB ?]

Just bought a head on e-bay to fix my motor and realize it had an odd casting number on it. All the web sights I have seen say the first casting number is 12-H-906 for a 62-64. Mine is a 11-g-216 Does anyone have any info on this head.

Thanks
Jerry

Re: HEAD

Sorry Jerry, the question is getting a lot of hits, but I think the choice of subject may have something to do with it. Personally I always look at anything entitled "HEAD", maybe it's just me, but with 20 something veiwings and no feedback I think people are disappointed. Try "top part of engine" or something like that.
he-he-he IMHO FWIW

Re: HEAD

Well, I for one, looked read the post, hoping to learn something or impart some information. Unfortunately, I had no information to provide on the specific question asked. So, I didn't reply...

I'm sure ~someone~ on these boards will have some sort of answer that'll help ya out in some way.

Re: HEAD

Tony? Doc?

Re: HEAD

11-g-216? what car is that on?

Re: HEAD

Sorry about that previous response, the Pinot Noir must have got to me. I rely on this forum for lots of good info and trusted advice and Jerry was doing the same. In the future I'll refrain from response without thought.

Re: HEAD

Are you sure it's an MGB head? Don't sound like it to me. Maybe it's an "A" head.

Re: HEAD

I'd have done the same, Mike... it'll sort itself out. That head number is unrecognzable to me as a B engine number so I passed on posting an answer, figuring I'd dig around a bit instead.

Tony nailed it, AFAIC.

Re: HEAD

They were used on:
Austin (A40, A50, A55)
Wolseley(15/50, 15/60, 1500)
Oxford
Cowley
Morris(10cwt. J/B, J/23, Van, Pick-up, Mini-bus etc.)
Nash Metropolitan(series II,III and 1500)
And (arguably) the very first MGA 1500 engines.

BUT,BUT,BUT.......
The only way to know for sure is to check the chamber volume and the valve diameter.

I expect you have a 38.7 cc chamber and small valves (MGA)

If you put that on a MGB that requires a 43 cc chamber.....

Well?.....It might go really-really fast for about 100 feet. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Re: HEAD

/bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/iagree.gif (Now, how'd you find that info so quickly?) I had to get into my engine specification book to see what head it was...& that entailed going through each iteration of the engine - page by page - to find the casting number & then the specs for the head.

I suspect this is one of those "Buyer Beware" moments.

Re: HEAD

I have one of those 11G216 casings and the only car I can think it came off of is a Metropolitan. Probably has an 'A' on the back. Don't put it on a B engine unless you want to go even slower. Many years ago I was trying to get an MGB tuned properly and I just could not get it to run like I thought it should. I checked cam lift, cam timing, ignition etc until I discovered it had the Datsun equivalent of this 11G216 installed. (Datsun copied the MGA engine in the sixties and was almost identical except for the vastly improved oil pump drive gears.)

Re: HEAD

THATS GREAT!!!
Bought the head from a place in Birmingham Ala. called Matthews Foreign Car Parts. Pac-slip and decription on e-bay said 62-67 MGB. Did not see the casting number until I received the head. Has been lev with new hardened seats, new valve guides in it but when I put the valves in it they are a little small. Know anyone with a metro who needs a good head.
Thanks
Jerry

Re: HEAD

Call Matthews & tell them they sent you the wrong head & you want either the correct one or your money returned.

Re: HEAD

Tony
No way to fix this one, got a real good deal on it. Know I can fix the valves by regrinding but what about the chamber vol.(probabely not)or best to try to get him to take it back?

Re: HEAD

If it was presented as an MGB head, it was MISrepresented. Call and let 'em know it's the wrong head for the application. Be *nice* but be sure of yourself. It's from another engine, documented across the planet as such.

I bought the Elva not knowing it had the wrong engine in it.
The correct one is a 1622.
As you know these '16' heads are about impossible to find.
Coincidently, I've done quite a bit of recent research on MGA heads.

(Also try and find a 1622 block & crank....What a PITA!)

Next impossible mission......
I have 3 original Elva magnesium rims.....I NEED 1 more.
(They were a rare option)

Finding a HRG Derrington head for a 1622 is another fantasy. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Yes.....And if you want a MGA to be able to run at 8,000 rpms......

You MUST have the Datsun cam & drive gears!

Re: HEAD

If Matthews sold it as an MGB head - definitely make them take it back & refund your money...if they won't - negative feedback.....Matthews is big business, they can do a refund!

Re: HEAD

Sounds like you know the guys Tony.
