Hardtop Project under way

Brosky

Great Pumpkin
Offline
The deck lid is now under primer waiting for the Pop Jacknuts and the shop wanted the hardtop to get started on it so that both can be painted at the same time.

Soooooo...here is the "attic find" hardtop that I bought nearly a year ago, but never got around to getting painted for this winter. It is in really great shape with no rust and only a few dents. Jorge at A&E is taking care of those as you will see in the pics below. I'll be ready for the cold weather next year.

I too these at lunch time, so it should have the rest of the paint removed by now and the first coats of epoxy primer on it as I type this.

This is Jorge and he is a great painter and metal man. He painted my car in 2008 and he is fussier than I am, so I never worry when I drop my car off for anything. I'm sure the top and deck lid will look as good as the rest of the car when he's done.

I've had my six for 33 years and I always wanted a hardtop. Please let us know how the car rides with it on. I've heard it takes out most of the cowl shake. Makes the car feel nice and tight. Great to have a good body man you can trust.

Bill, as in Kodanja, swears by his. He drives all winter, as long as the roads are clear and he loves it.

It really changes the character of the car - I love mine even in SoCal.
Not to mention providing amusement for all us top-down fanatics !

Looking for a TR6 hardtop...prefer a nice original
but seeing what Paul has going...might be interested
in a restoration project. Appreciate a PM if you
know of one. Gil

Gil, that is an original TR6 top. The fiberglass ones were the aftermarket units. These come up on ebay all the time. One went last week for $600+, but I can't verify condition.

And Tom, I only wanted to be doing the seats first and then the deck lid and luggage rack. Allan wanted to paint both, so now I have three projects going instead of one.

having the hardtop on the car really does stiffin the feel of the car

after taking it off for the summer I can really feel the difference'

Looking great Paul betcha cant wait till its done, just in time for the nice weather

Has anyone seen a GT6 with the roof cut ala-targa?

Bill, all I wanted done was the deck lid & luggage rack for the summer, but he wants to paint them both at the same time. Oh well, it will be ready for next winter.

Yes, a friend of mine did that to one over 20 years ago. He still has the car tucked away in storage.

There was one on eBay in November or December.

So.... opinions, how does it look? If the end result was a head turner, I would invest a dime or two in a parts car .(after getting the approval of the budget committee.) We may be trading houses.

Some body shop updates from last night.

The examples I've seen have not impressed me. However, if you want to experiment, contact me via PM, as I've a couple of GT6 tubs that someone could "practice" on!

The sealer went on Friday and it sat in a very warm paint booth over the weekend. They'll flip it over and do some of the hidden spots and then get it ready for color later this week.
