Had a chat with a Trooper this morning.

Man, were it me, I'd pay that one just for the bragging rights at next month's club meeting!

Hmmm... this conversation is making me wonder about performance among Spridgets.

Specifically, is it strange and different to be able to pull some G forces going uphill passing everybody on the road?

Is 85 - 95 mph uphill really that unheard of?

If so, then WTH do I have going on under the hood???

Every day I fly up that same hill at about 85 mph. There's really nowhere for Troopers to hide there on the uphill side, you would see them long before they saw you. Frank zips up there like a well oiled machine. I still have good acceleration left over should I need it.

This is why I suppose I wanted to spend time really fixing my brakes, you just can't have a car like this and inadequate braking.

Admittedly I have a tired Bugeye and I'm at altitude, but I was more like 35 mph up the big hills here. Now with the new motor...

That Nissan motor must have quite a bit more grunt!

Tell em your electrics are Lucas and the spedo was out.

That reminds me of a funny story involving my 77 midget when I was 16. It had the annoying habit of burning up alternators so the battery would drain and the car would gradually die.

I was driving home one night when this happened and ran a stop sign ( no cars nearby) in my sister's neighborhood trying to get to her house before the car died. The car died right in front of her house. The police drove up behind me, and I told them my story. They got in the car, turned the key, and it was dead as a doornail.

Got away with a warning! Saved by Lucas!!

Heh - yes I told him about the speedo & I think that's part of why he dropped the fine down. Besides I think he was amused. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

I've had a little over 30 speeding tickets in my life Rick. Not many in the past few years but, I know the feeling. I still am bad to speed and I will never learn. I always know what the fastest speed my cars will do, especailly since I bought that GPS. Before the rebuild my midget would do right at 100 on the level. I don't know what its gonna do now with a rebuilt engine, 5 speed , and higher diff ratio. My cam was in good shape so I did not replace it. I don't know what lift it has but its more than the stock specs.

He also may have been doing you a favor by writing down 87- I think 20 over is still the threshold for wreckless driving in WA. I got a ticket years back and the trooper said he got me at 72 in a 50. I admitted I realized I was going a little fast, but thought it was a 65. He thanked me for the honesty and said he'd knock it back to 67 so I'd avoid wreckless driving charges. First and only time I've ever been caught as I'm pretty careful now. Excessive tickets and especially wreckless driving aren't thought of too highly in my industy. Interesting, since I'm paid to do 550+ mph (airplane), but 20 over in a car is a deal breaker!

Yes John, that makes sense. It could have gone much worse.
That was the first speeding ticket I have had in over 20 years. Definitely an eye opener.

Ah - Kim, that's what I like to hear. It's nice having the power but we have to be careful about it's application!

Power applied responsibly is something to strive for,I'm sure.

I suppose Frank objects to travelling slow huh? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

Nah, around town he kind of likes to strut a bit.
Homely as he is, he still turns heads & gets compliments just about every time we go out. He likes that /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

I don't know about anyone else but after 75-80+ driving Bugsy gets to be a little bit scary. Front end is in good shape but definitely ruts in the roads around here on the Expressway can give you a great case of pucker power. Things tend to wander around a bit.

If I ever get nailed on a 100MPH "tuning run" in the turbo bugeye, I'm going to frame the ticket and post a copy on my home page. I use a frontage road next to a country stretch of freeway. Lots of places to go before the freeway "heat" can find an exit and hunt me down. Last time I was stopped for flagrantly abusing the 65 limit I got off, since the Chippy was a car buff. After 30 minutes of stories about his beloved "Elmo", I was on my way grinning.

If you've got an old car and a good attitude, you are practically immune.

We've got 75 limits on some stretches of I-15 here in Utah, and I think there may be a spot in Texas (?) with 80 limits.

Thankfully the old 55 days are largely gone now.

Our interstate (I-90) has a 70 limit until you get close to cities. I think it's 75 on the other side of the mountains in the wide open farming country.

Rick, if it goes to court I'll pay the fine if you say to the judge "Your honour, it's just lucky that I couldn't get it out of 1st gear..."

Will that include whatever the judge gives for contempt Pete? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

So yeah i get to about 65 in my Midget and i get very Uneasy. I think it the Small Factor there. and it always Plays in my mind. If i get loose and spin out i am dead. so i try not to take roads that require me to go more than 55. I had an Old Fiberglass Dune Buggy once. it was slightly bigger than the Midget but wieght wise about the same. and one time i was speeding around a Curve and the Back End Came Loose and i ended up in a Creek. Lucky I didn't come out of the thing and it Landed right side up. So everytime i get going fast in the MG i think of that LOL. No ticket for me thanks. I have way to many.

Ohh I forgot to Mention i have a red light Ticket laying here on the desk that needs to be Paid /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif [censored] Cameras

Hey, I didn't know you guys had 70 speed limits. Last I heard it had in a few select places gone up from 55 to 65.

I know in Florida the speed limit is the "suggested minimum." /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif
