So I have really been enjoying my bugeye since getting my hot 948 built by Hap installed. The car is a whole new animal I can actually keep up and stay ahead of modern traffic. The problem I keep running into is my rear H1 carb. No matter what I do I can not keep this think from being overly rich. Front two plugs always look good but back dark. The fixed needle seems to rub no matter how many times I try and adjust it. These carbs were rebuilt elsewhere (not Hap) and seem to be really nicely done. I am about to just give up and switch to HS2's. Anyone else ever have this much of a headache with H1's?

Is it the needle that is not centered on the rear thus causing it to run rich or is it the choke is always a bit on.

1. does the piston drop with a thunk when realised?

2. After useing it can you push the choke up into the carb a bit further.

There is of course a solution for both these conditions, may take 5 Min.

Needle is centered perfectly and always drops with a thump. I have one of those tools from moss to center it. I wonder if the jet wiggles a little when I turn the mixture adjusment nut and thus causes fouling. Chokes linkages all seem to be in good ordered not overly tight or slack. No leaks anywhere that I have found.

If the needle is rubbing I'm surprised the piston drops cleanly with a thunk - actually it should be more of a loud click.
Can you look at the carbs, cleaners off, and see if the pistons lift evenly when you accelerate?
If it seems the jet is moving out of its centred position when you adjust the mixture nut, you may have a bent jet.

Bent Jet is what I am thinking because they center up nicely on initial set it is when I start moving the mixture nut that it starts binding. Sometimes I can move the mixture nut a little further and it stops. The crazy thing is it idles and runs excellent. I think I have another set of new jets and needles stashed away will have to check.

Yep I also vote for a bent needle.

Remove what you got and roll em on a peice of glass. Should be able to spot a bent one.
