Here's a couple of closeups of the first site from last fall:

There's an interesting flaw in the imagery at 61.056614,-149.686049 -- that goes a long way to show that the imagery isn't all space-based (not a lot of it is). The item there is the corner of a frame of scanned aerial film showing the serial number of the aerial camera used to take the picture. In this case it's a Zeiss RMK-TOP 15 (same as mine), probably from a company in Anchorage that has several of them. Just south of the serial number "flaw" is a fiducial mark from the same camera.
 
Yeah, kind of a weird design. He moved there from a fly-in subdivision in Daytona. The airstrip used to be private, owned by the guy that made his fortune on "Nautilus" equipment. They've spruced the place up quite a bit, and both runways are in pretty good shape.

People are awestruck by his 707 and the living-on-the-runway situation (which isn't rare around here at all), but all that is mild compared to a lot of the houses and farms around central Florida.
 
Google Earth is a great timewaster, right up there with Wikipedia and TVLand. I've used it quite a bit in relation to my other hobby (rail photography), when trying to find new places to shoot. The road overlays really help here.

I have the "Motorsports" kmz file that lists just about every single racetrack currently in use, as well as many disused tracks. Sadly, Road America is still in the "lo-fi" zone, but my "local" track (the now disused Meadowdale Raceway in Carpentersville) shows up nicely.

Very close, guv. It's the disused rooftop track at Fiat's Lingotto factory. As used in The Italian Job (proper version).

Here's Fiorano. Note the bright red Ferrari team trucks.

You guys have way too much time...I've spent the entire day trimming bushes, tree limbs, etc....still have about 100 Crepe Myrtles to go - get on down here to help out!

And just east and a little south of Fiorano is the front gate to the factory, the original Ferrari store and the Ferrari Galleria.

Baz, that's a pretty cool catch. If you seek out LAX, you'll see an airliner taking off. I also have a kmz file that's "all airplanes in flight", which includes some interesting stuff. I don't have Google Earth on this computer so I can't look up any coordinates right now but I'll see what I can find.

Try searching for "Mojave Airport" (I think) and you'll get the big airliner graveyard in California. You can also find Edwards AFB (I was looking for Muroc Dry Lake)

In the search box on Google Earth desktop, type in area 51, then click "Go there".

Any ideas (to scale) how long that runway is? Looks to be on a 34 / 16 heading. Must be several miles.....?

32/14 - including the closed portion of the runway, the entire paved area is around 24000ft long.
