My "hood" is a few months only. Like I said, it depends on the area - some places are updated more frequenntly that others. It would really be cool if it were real time.

My last post didn't take the image from google earth. Here is is again...

I subscribe to a service where I can save my runs, bike rides, etc. on my GPS cell phone via a program called BimActive and then view them on the website or export to Goggle Earth. If you download and open the following zip archive ..

activity zip

Then double click to open it in Goggle Earth, select 'activity path' in the left dialog box and then the play arrow it will 'fly' along the path. This is one of my favorite runs by the beach. As you can tell the GPS is off at times, especially around tighter bends/turns as my phone updates every 5 seconds. The newest phones update every 2 or 3 seconds. enjoy!

Oh wow that is too cool!. If I have a GPS, can I do this too?

yes, if you go to https://www.bimactive.com and signup (it's free) you can upload your activies from a regular GPS device (maybe your favorite windy road!). Then you can export it to Google Earth. There are other services out there too but this is the only one I've used since it is offered through Verizon.

Cheers,
John

Google Earth seems to have bred hundreds of web sites covering various special interests.

This one shows images and locations of race tracks around the world. Another group is collecting images of significant motorsport-related locations like the first Lotus facility, Stirling Moss's house, and so on.

I used it to locate where the Berkeley plant was in Biggleswade and verified it with the historical society there. That and finding a few tracks I'm familiar with are the extent of my "research".

I can find our house (barely - it's low res and hidden by trees) and can see excellent detail at my daughter's place - even her horses and cars show up.

My neighbors' houses show up... mine is obscured by trees.

Herself - yep, there was...thus, Doc's 'ant trail' is how people come out from under the highway to walk over to see it.

I remember when you could wander around amidst the stones!

Haven't tinkered with Google Earth in a few months. The last time I messed with it, I was able to track down every house I ever lived in while growing up. From Crestview, FL, to Shalimar, FL, to the apartments in Gainesville, FL. I even tracked down the barracks I stayed in while stationed in Okinawa (and the barracks on Mt Fuji). It was fun to waste the time away recollecting the areas from memory while looking at them with the "bird's eye", as it were.

How often do they update the sattelite data?

The majority of the data (USA anyway) isn't Satellite based, it's from aerial photographs. The projects the data are derived from are flown periodically, then people like Google get ahold of it awhile later. Some areas have been updated every 2-3 years, others have pretty old imagery.

There's also Google Moon. It shows the sites where the lunar landers set down. Use the slider on the left side to bring the surface closer. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbsup.gif
