Guess what I just bought

Ahhh... that brings back some memories.

My dad bought one when they first came out, I believe he always referred to it as a 64-1/2.

Orange hard top, black interior, 289 w/3 speed.

It had no air conditioning, and our vacation trips got a bit toasty with my 2 sisters and myself in the back/black seat with the sun beating down.

I remember going with my Dad to trade it off in '67 when my brother was born for a more practicle Galaxie 500 4 door.

He always swore that it was quite a bit faster than other 289's. I remember when the mechanic from the dealership took it for a test drive. He came back and told the salesman that he was going to take it himself, and commented to my dad how quick it was.

I really missed it on the ride back home in the Galaxie, and wished I had it today.

Good luck Shannon... keep us posted on the progress.

RE Docs comment, that is why I like the corvairs. More or less the same size as the stang, but as different as night and day under the skin. I am sorry that Chevy/GM did not work harder on "the American Porsche" marketing thing (and continue development past 65). Who knows, by now the Corvette coulda had a stablemate. Nice score on the Stang. With just a pile of bucks you can update with all the Shelby repro parts......

If the US automakers' engineers had more sway than their bean counters & marketing departments, think what we'd have today.

As evidence: Z06 Corvette.

But it's 40 years too late, IMO.

Doc, the last real "car guy" to run GM was John Delorean.

Then the bean counters took over and it's been crap ever since.
Bob Lutz tries, but he's like a salmon.
When he came to GM, he walked into one of the styling studios, where they proudly showed him their latest creation. They said "This is the 2006 Pontiac XXX." He took one look, said "No it's not." and walked out.

So true, Paul! Marketing is EVERYTHING! Too bad the "Big 3" didn't put a bit of that effort/expense into modernising their products UNDER the skin.

(Cough, cough) Erm, Chrysler did.

Ahem, & they overdubbed the Mustang in Bullitt with sound from a GT40.

Dad had a Mustang fastback, and another squareback Mustang. I remember the Mustangs comparing unfavorably in my mind to even the massive Chrysler Newport 4-door (torsion bar suspensions & Mopar engine insanity counts for a LOT).

I'm not one of these particular car make zealots with a "P*** on (Chevy/Dodge/Ford) sticker; it's just that our family had cars like some people have cats.

Not slamming the Mustang as a car to own either. The Super Bird is awesome in specs & appearance, but I think I'd own an old Mustang before it!
