GT6 GT6+ disassembling steering column

Re: disassembling steering column

Let me quote from 14JUL09:
"Yup, tried the key in all positions, the column still turns a complete 360 degrees in all positions. That is what is baffling me that it turns 360, and yet somehow the darn thing is still locked??? I can pull the wheel/column about 7.5 inches inside the outer column, but the cutout area in the inner column that has been machined out, presumably to allow for the locking device to seat is 8.5 inches from the end of the column. In other words the cutout area doesn't reach the clamp area before the inner column stops. I can turn the inner column so that the cutout area is facing down and away from the clamp and it still hangs up."

Now.
It has been a LONG time since I did one of these.
I have dug up drawings.

He can move the shaft 7.5" out of the column.
Obviously, the lock is not engaging the shaft collar, nor is there a "ring" that is holding it in place at the ignition lock area.
That is what the lock bolt at the bottom of the column is for.

The drawing I have seems to reference that the lock plate on the shaft is large diameter, maybe twice what the actual shaft is.

Thge OD of the shaft proper is roughly the ID of the bushings in the ends of the column.
Right?

So, how is this big lock collar supposed to fit THROUGH those bushings?

My old memory is you run the shaft one way as far as you can, compress the ears on the now fully exposed bushing, and remove the exposed bushing, and the shaft should come out, with the lock ring collar and the trafficator cancelling cams still attached.

No?

And, you remove the key, the pin is now fully locked into the collar locking ring, true?

Like I said, it's been at least 20 years.
This is good therapy so humour me.

Being able to shake those grey cells up a bit is a good thing.

Re: disassembling steering column

well, the ignition lock is off and now the mystery is solved, there is a slot in the column that is located in a built up area on the column. but you still can't remove the inner column unless you remove the steering wheel and then you still have to remove the bushing at lower end. The bushing at the top end is staying because I'm not prepared to take that bell housing off that holds the directional and high beam switches, and unless you remove that housing you can't get a new bushing in. To make matters worse, I had to hammer on the end of the column to eventually work out that bottom bushing and really mucked up the threads, the book lists the thread on that end as 9/16 whit, which appears to be a 28 count thread. What does whit mean? Had I known what a trial this would be, the old bushings would have been just fine.

PS. Thought I'd save Skip a little trouble
