GRRRRRRRRRRR! Ratzenfratzen!

The SU fuel pump regulates itself. When the carbs are full of fuel, they close a little valve, and the pump stops working until it needs to send more fuel to the carbs again. Works very well, and the car should run fine (until the next problem shows up - lol)

And that brings us back to...my pump NEVER stops working, it ticks constantly, the same, at the same rate.

Except for the odd noise it was making today along with the ticking, and the day I died at the post office.

Hmmm, perhaps I should rephrase that with Mr. Pinkerton in the house. "The day my car quit running at the post office."

Nothing Paul.

You sure you sent it to the right jaybird?

Back to the beginning: when an SU fuel pump never stops ticking, there's one of 2 things wrong:
1) there's an air leak somewhere in the fuel lines (probably not), or
2) the diaphagm inside the fuel pump is cracked

Rebuild kits/parts are out there & its a relatively easy repair!

I'm surprised your mechanic didn't insist it be repaired when he did the SU conversion!

Chuck's my mechanic, remember Tony? For all I know, maybe they did check the pump and repair it, I never asked, Chuck never said, but I seriously doubt it.

No air leak, I checked the lines last time.

The pump has never stopped ticking, or slowed down, since I bought the car.

After I ran out of gas the other morn, I turned to key and listend to the: Tump-tump-tump-tump-tump-tum--tum--tum--tu---tu----tu-------tu
and then when it no longer thumped, the car started right up on the first try. Somethings wrong if yours (if it's an SU) keeps thumping all the time.

I don't think Janel has an SU pump. I believe it's a Facet/Purelator type. That's why it never stops ticking.

Yup. This is a previously traveled road...

Sorry I'm new here - I musta missed the thread (probably a big one I'm sure /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif ) about what fuel pump Janel has.

Hiding behind the thread wall from Janel now - lol.

& that's why she needs the pressure regulator that continues to cause problems

I'm reminded of the saying, "if you don't have time or money to repair it correctly the first time, what makes you think you'll have either another time?"

The DPO 'fixed at' the problem...Janel either lives quietly with it or fixes it!

Check the quick carb fix thread and the ummm, 30 minutes at the post office - and you'll learn all you ever didn't want to know about carburetion, fuel, ignition ad nauseum.

& after all the $$$'s & sweat & haranging & work & waiting....?

oh, ad nausea. Sorry - I chose to bypass that one BECAUSE of it's size.

BEST fix... GET THE SU PUMP! It's what $150-160? Well worth it. Then chunk that piece o crap regulator out!

Sorry I'm so persistant on this one, but I used to have this "special" brother in law who thought all vehicle problems were the carb... No matter if it was the transmission slipping... He had one of those round thingys on EVERY CAR HE EVER OWNED!!!! I swear he had extras of them in his glove box!

My opinion. If you even think you need one of those, get the right parts.

I will continue to watch this with great intrest. It previously had the longes thread in history till all was going to be made well with a couple of SUs. Sigh, didn't work.
