Ok... 10 years ago didn't seem that far back, but these negs look terrible. There were (are) a lot of houses around the island, but we hardly saw anyone there doing anything. There were a ton of feral mules walking around, and a small rendering facility (about the size of a small 7-11) in the middle of town with hides sitting in the sun. There were a bunch of B&Bs and only one or two small hotels. The hotel folks asked us not to flush the toilet except at low tide (I think), otherwise we'd have to get a bucket and fill it with water to actually make the gadget flush. We asked about a taxi at the airport and the customs guy (well, he was the only guy there really) kind of scratched his head - then a big truck full of prisoners came by and we hopped in with the guys in the orange jumpsuits. The next day the local police officer let us ride back and forth with him. He wasn't doing much else.

The streets and walkways were lined with Conch shells. There were piles of them everywhere. Dave, if you get a chance stop at the pub and get a fried Conch-fritter platter. I lived on that for a week.

Anyway, here are a few pics - the whole gallery is here.

Interesting Scott-Thanks.

Is that a large salt extraction "farm" in the center of the
photo? We still have an active gourmet salt farm here in Puerto Rico.

I agree, conch fritter or soup taste wonderful. Even raw with a little lime and hot sauce.

Dave- St Thomas is the best place in the caribbean to purchase
quality watches at really good prices. We got to St Thomas fairly often.
A real nice place to go for a weekend get-away.

enjoy your trip, pal!!

Drop us a note on your progress from a cybercafe.

Yup... inactive when I was there. Several of the islands out that way were set up like that.

The salt farms are still shut down as they could no longer get the labor to staff the farms. Grand Turk's largest industry is now tourism. The Carnival/Princess/Holland America company has installed a cruise ship pier where they run excursions, have shops, and the biggest installation is Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville resort. The pool and beach there is fantastic. We also visited the old prison, the quarry, and rode and hiked to Gun Hill which is the highest elevation (not exactly Pike's Peak) to get an overlook of the island on our tour. Not too much to do yet, but it is expanding and there are a few inns and B & B's in operation on the island.

As to shopping in St Thomas, we did most of that when we were there in August. I had bought my first 35mm camera there back in 1970, and last year I did get a good watch.

It was a relaxing vacation where I never checked out the internet, enjoyed great food, and got to visit with old friends from my 32 years with Lifetouch Inc. as we had 90 members of the Lifetouch Alumni club on the SS. Zuiderdam for a week. Now to wade through all I missed here and in my emails. I will try to post a photo or two once I get through the several gigs of photos I brought home.

Wow... what a change. When I flew the survey missions there was nothing...and I mean nothing there at all (except for a couple of divers that came and went).

Now I can't even fly in there, they don't sell fuel.
