GPM requirement for a replacement pump

Required fuel flow at maximum horsepower is:

The brake Specific fuel consumption of an engine ranges from 0.35 to 0.6 lb/hr/hp. Average is about 0.5 lb/hr/hp.

Gasoline weighs 5.6 to 6.5 lb per gallon. Use 6.0.

Example: 150 hp engine, .5 lb/hr * 150 hp = 75 lb/hr.
75 lb/hr/6 lb/gal = 12.5 gal/hour = 0.21 gal/minute = 1.7 pints/minute.


Example: 100 hp engine, .5 lb * 100 hp = 50 lb/hr
50 lb/6 lb/gal = 8.3 gal/hour = 0.14 gal/minute = 1.12 pints/minute.

A Pump rated at 8.3 gal/hr or more would be required for 100 hp sustained output. 12.5 gal/hour for 150 hp.

As a general rule, a pint a minute. With pressure not to exceed 4PSI.

Doc gave the "rule of thumbs" with his answer and added on top of that a pressure that should not be exceded /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

My reply was as general as Keith's question; For all I know it was a quiery into gas station pumps./bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif

Had it not been th' MG forum of BCF, my immediate response woulda been: "Some!"

The easy answer is to look at the specifications of the original fuel pump that came in the MGB. For the AUA 150 pumps used on the early (up to mid 64) MGB is 1.1 Pints per minute, for all the later MGBs using the AUF 300/AZX 1300 series pumps it is 2.4 pints per minute. Note, if you look at the Burlen Fuel Systems web sites, the specifications for volume will be slightly different as they are given in Impeiral pints or gallons.

Looking at Dave's figures, it can be seen that the pumps used in the early MGBs was barely adequate and is probably the reason forthe switch to the later pumps (besides the better flow smoothing features of the later pumps.
