Got home Monday afternoon. Incredible trip, and Great Expierence!
Car ran flawlessly,......except the brand new speedo cable (from VB) only lasted a few miles.
The collar on the end that screws onto the speedo head sheared itself off. The needle was bouncing real bad from the very beginning,...so I kinda figured I was gonna loose the speedo somewhere along the trip.
That collar kept backing itself off, and I kept reaching up to tighten it up. The last time I reached up there, the cable was hanging down and the collar was still on the back of the speedo.
Got a feeling I gotta get the speedo head re-worked too.
The odometer only worked for 2 miles,...it quit way before the cable went south.
Already replaced the cable with one out of a TR250 parts car(thanks Todd). The speedo still bounces badly, and the odometer does'nt work at all. But atleast I know the cable is good.

Good for you... a bold and memorable first drive. I once had the speedo cable drop loose and entangle itself in the hair on my leg -- glad you didn't get to experience that.
 
Actually the hood was louvered a long time ago. Definetly not factory!
Most TR Purists frown on that hood. The hood was like that when the previous owner got the car. He said liked it, so he never replaced it. He had the car for 9 years. So the hood was punched out atleast 9 years ago. I don't see me taking that louvered hood off either. I really like the look,....even if I will get a bunch of grief from some people.
I think the hood, and the Panasport Wheels really make the car look Tuff,...or Aggressive. The oversized tires look cool too. They are P225/60/15. The Panasports are 15", and I believe 7" wide,...but I'm not positive about the width. They could be 6", but I think they look more like 7".
The car has the A type OD, although it is not an original OD car. The motor is recently rebuilt with a S2 camshaft. Which I'm told is the cam used in the Petrol Injection cars overseas.
The car has a single exhaust system, with a Glasspack muffler. Very loud. Definetly sounds "Racey". Sounds great when your "Gett'in on it",...and crackles nicely when you let off the gas. Just too much fun!
I met the seller at the airport in Austin to pick up the car, and the car was in the parking deck. I heard the car coming long before I saw it. It actually set off a few car alarms in the parking deck while they were blasting thru there.
It's really loud,...but like the hood,...I'm not sure I want to change that aspect of the car,.....atleast not yet /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

That car looks awfully familiar!! I'm the one who took pictures of it for you when it was still in Dallas. I'm glad you came to terms with the seller. When I met him, he started out be saying that he was reconsidering his offer to sell it.

Best of luck with the car. I'm just a week behind you - I'll be leaving Friday for New Jersey in my GT6. Let's hope the Triumph gods continue to smile on LBC's in the middle of Tennessee!!

Yes the seller was very reluctant to let the car go. I thought that was actually a good sign. It was'nt like he was trying to "unload" it. The fact that he had it for 9 years is also a plus.
The car was actually better that I was expecting it to be. So I'm real happy with the whole deal.

Like your louvers. I had a single row of 13 punched on the right side of my bonnet, right over the triple ZS carbs with 3' KN filters. Had to put KN "socks" (they call them prechargers) on the filters to keep the water out. Water(and air) suck in at highway speed, and heat escapes at idle. Do you have any problem with water on the right side of your engine, ie. the electricals?

I have not driven it in any rain yet. However the previous owner did. No apparent problems. He said he took it to Kansas City last year in a monsoon. Even drove it thru deep standing water.......don't know if I'd do that.

I'm not planning on driving in inclimate weather,...but I'm sure I'll get caught in the rain sooner or later. We'll see what happenss then I guess.

Actually, I meant do you have any problems with water on the "left" side of your engine, with the electricals. I had to have the brace on the right side moved over about 4 inches to make room for the louvers. It is truly amazing how much heat rises out of these louvers at idle. Off roaders routinely louver their hoods to allow excess heat out. Also, look at the Healey 100. I believe they had factory louvers.

What I meant to say in the previous post was do you have any problems with the "left" side of your engine compartment, where the electricals are. I had the brace moved over about 4 inches to make room for my 13 louvers, it is truly amazing how much heat comes out at idle. Off roaders often louver their hoods to cool their engines. I believe the factory Healey 100 had louvers as well.

Congrats on the trip! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif That is one VERY nice ride.
How is the clearance on those wheels? They look great.
I found a local speedometer rebuild shop to make a custom cable (700r4 tranny to Tr6 housing) and to completely rebuild the speedo workings. Mine had been doing the fluctuating thing since I owned it. It cost me $130 total. It now runs smooth as can be.

There's a guy in New York (I think) that rebuilt my speedo and his work has been discussed on this board before. His name is either Nisinger or Nosinger. Perhaps someone else has his contact info. If not, you can definitely get it by calling British Auto Specialists in Fort Worth. Their tool-free number is (800) 876-4524 (TR-MG-JAG).

I drove my GT6 without a speedo for a while and even though it's easy to get your speed from the tach, it's nice not to have to think that hard when you're out for a drive. (And it's way easier to keep up with periodic maintenance when you know how many miles you have driven!)
 
I have heard the front tires rub when I cut the wheel hard and back up. Have'nt heard any rubbing while going foward,...even with the wheel cut. I think it's rubbing while backing up because when I let the clutch out while backing up the nose of the car dips down a bit, while the rear end rises up a bit. I think that's when it rubs.

Even TR3s are somewhat louvered... 2 slots along that ridge towards the back edge of the bonnet. Of course, some also remove the right side headlamp bucket to ram a lot more air in there.
 
i thought there were 3 different tr3 hoods and not all were louvered?

The early TR2 aluminum and later steel hoods all had 4 cooling slots. TR3, 3A and B,s all had 2 slots. Congrats stinky! Stopped smiling yet?
